  • I don’t use them but I follow the news about them loosely. The reason for this is epistemic humility. Claude has a pretty good idea of what its capabilities are and where the ceiling is. Chatgpt has no clue what its limits are so it believes it can do everything. Basically chatgpt has a lot of info and no idea where the gaps live and Claude has a fair idea when to search or use some external function to handle something. Gemini has less than Claude but more than chatgpt. Grok has little to no epistemic humility, but it did manage to accurately portray Musk as a world champion piss drinker, something none of the others were able to do.

I say that, but it’s been a few months since I looked. That could have changed because shit moves fast. By the looks of what it’s trying to do with the timer chatgpt has less than it used to. Possibly because of the way the model is trained to be helpful and confident.

  • This is pretty accurate. When I came up I worked in an MSP. So I had to deal with customers. It taught me a lot about being able to say anything to people. You can break any news to anyone, it’s all in how you present it. So I gained people skills.

After I passed through that gauntlet and gained a breadth of knowledge, I went internal and gained a depth of knowledge. And I started out breaking the news in a way that I would break news to a customer.

Later after I proved my depth of knowledge I started being able to be blunt to any CIO or CTO I came across. And most of the time they’d send me reqs or tell me something was happening that required my skill set then would leave me the hell alone to handle it without kibitzing or bumping my fucking elbow.

When I started my own one man consulting shop I stopped giving shits at all. I found a good client and we have a good contract and most of the C levels like having someone on staff who just says what they’re thinking instead of sanitizing it. The CIO doesn’t necessarily like it but he’s outnumbered.

All this really only worked because I did go through a few years of soft skill hell though. Price you pay and all that. Well, price I paid for this path.

  • I get what you’re saying and acknowledge that that’s the best environment for some people, but for me there’s a different feel in being in your office and being on the back porch or out in the garage with the door open.

The fresh air, mild distractions on an easy day, and more natural light make me feel good. I think the beach would be a fucking nightmare for me. Same for things like a coffee shop. But if I’m in at least a semi private space and it’s not a balls to the wall day, I’ll take not being chained to the desk every time it’s practical.

  • The issue is that studies show that friendliness will improve business through retention. It’s cheaper to fake friendliness than it is to actually build an environment where people give a shit.

It’s along the same lines as retail establishments who force their employees to stand because it makes them look more professional/busier/more hard working. Instead of either letting retail employees sit down (especially cashiers, what the fuck?) or giving them something meaningful to do that isn’t cleaning the same square foot of floor or rearranging because you’re tired of seeing your workers happy and want to force customers to look in a different place every time they walk in, you force them to look busy. They’re building a cargo cult of management.

  • If I didn’t know better (I do) I’d see that sign and wonder why they’re painting them as white supremacists (I’d go look it up). So you’ve got idiots who probably aren’t putting two and two together and disingenuous people saying “oh so if you’re against pedos you’re a white supremacist now? I guess that makes me a white supremacist because I hate pedos!”. No, believing white people are better than people who are not white makes you a white supremacist. You can hold two beliefs at once. You can even lie about a second belief to get idiots on your side. If NAMBLA launched a “stealing is bad” campaign would you be out there saying “well if being against theft makes someone a pedo, line them little boys up!”?

And the headlines don’t help. Surely there’s a way in the headline to let people know this is a known hate group doing something for attention. Because, as we’ve seen, idiots will claim they’re throwing their hearts out to the children who are victims or they were all waving at the camera for this picture or something stupid based on the headline and photo.

God dammit, my blood pressure is up and it ain’t even noon.

  • Whether or not I saw something has zero to do with what they’re stealing and everything to do with where they’re stealing from.

You do not steal from Mom and Pop shops. I will may not say anything to the staff, but I might pay for it or I might direct you to a better place to go steal.

If I see something in Walmart, no I fucking didn’t. I don’t care what it is.

Edit: based on the reply. It’s a good point, but not something I’ve personally run into so it’s not something I’ve had to consider. I’ve seen idiot kids doing idiot kid things. I’ve seen people in need. I’ve not seen a gang or tweakers stealing from a local shop, only large retailers (no I didn’t, I do not give a shit) or individuals (I give many shits about this and my response ranges from stopping them to getting evidence to give to the owners depending on more factors than I can list).
