what is the reason to put that tool into a browser? if i use the thing on my private computer, it increases complexity compared to a local installation (not an issue for many ppl here, but for my grandma surely). if i use it on a corporate environment, wouldn’t more employees use it if it was the default PDF viewer on their managed device?

That is the trap that, sadly, my company fell for too. The POC was written in python. very fast i might add. but it was only that: a POC. if the whole backend crashes due to unexpected user input - noone cared. if the frontend displayed gibberish because the JSON made wrong assumptions about not defined data types - sweep it under the rug, don’t do that during presentations.

but if it came to building a resilient system, which can be shipped to customers and preferably maintained by them (with minimal consulting contract for access to our guys)… we cursed the way python worked.

maybe this is more symptomatic. i have been through the academic wringer and have worked with ai technology in a professional way. from experience: ai is good at doing things, which have been done thousands of times (how else would it have learned it). and it can save you some time doing stupid tasks.

look at this the other way around: if ai is good at writing scientific papers, it has been done thousands of times and is unimaginative. this covers with much of my experience in academia.

i am not saying, that there are no scientific discoveries to be made anymore. quite the opposite. but i do believe that we overload students with stupid tasks and stress them beyond reason.

academia is very important. but as institutions of learning, discovery and preserving knowledge. over the years it has accumulated a lot of dead weight.

so yes, holidays. if not specifically unpaid leave, all holidays should be paid. sick is not time off anyway. it is recovering, so company resources are used appropriately: not making others sick and being 100% as soon as possible (instead of a zombie at work).

what in the world is PTO? best guess from context is holidays. but why would anyone make it a 3 letter acronym? i am sure any 3 letter acronym has at least 3 different meanings in different contexts…

but if PTO actually is holidays, yes take them. don’t let some third world country grifters, like you find them often in the usa, redefine words and take away basic things - just because they call it slightly different.

i guess there is pixelfed. but i would compare it more to instagram. many lemmy instances allow uploading pictures directly, so you dont necessarily need a separate host.

but where i see the biggest caveat, is costs. cloud storage is not cheap and pictures are extremely large compared to text. therefore some lemmy instances only keep uploaded pics for a certain amount of time.

I dont know whether imgur is keeping pictures for ever or not… so i am not sure if it federated imgur would solve the ‘amnesia issue’ of some lemmy instances.

sometimes you don’t have to (or can’t) have a full plan A-Z. Sometimes you just have to start somewhere - usually with gathering ppl. euromaidan is a great example of that.

exactly what i am talking about. age restriction at the physical store kept you away for a while, while not forcing an alternative/underground market. however, if you knew the only way to get it is on an alternative store - you would immediately have looked there.

if you can run a private server, you can get rid of all ‘phone home’ requirements.

so you just need a cracked copy of the game itself. luckily it is completely legal to remove digital locks on anything you bought in many countries (not the usa though).

age verification is just a BS strawman. do you remember when we where young? we would access stuff and find ways to buy stuff. but whenever there was a reasonable but fair gap, it would be much harder to get whatever we wanted: buying weed was so much easier, than buying alcohol (without the appropriate age).

pirating is easy (even i figured it out before having enough money to buy movies & games). so the kids will just pirate that stuff and get their way anyway. age verification at the store makes so much more sense. sure, there are ways to circumvent those. but it is a reasonable stop block.

to me the right looks much better. left looks like there is a thousand intagram filters applied and no detail survived the onslaught.
