it depends. you mention “intense fear” as opposed to being uncomfortable or uneasy or feeling slightly threatened. that would be the average response, i’d think. if you have a history of abuse or trauma, then your intense fear may be a disordered response.

i don’t believe in free will so i’m not certain we control much of anything. i’ve always thought of myself as the only supervisor in the panopticon that is me. i can observe and understand and process and form connections, but choices are made for me at the subconscious level before i am even aware of them. as the supervisor i can influence the operation of the panopticon but i cannot control it. i obtain information based on experiences and use logic and reasoning to take it apart.

if so, the human fascination with animals is ancient. over time we began attributing human traits to their behaviors and started connecting to them on personal and spiritual levels. then we started making art depicting those anthropomorphic animals on cave walls.

furries simply inhabit a persona (fursona) to express themselves behind the security of the confidence being that character gives them. a lot of us feel like our fursona is an ideal representation of ourselves. it helps us connect to our own personhood, strangely.

it’s also fun and can be sexy if ya want.
