2·1 month agoWe shall see. My current Whirlpools are 15 years old and have their fair share of issues.
Refrigerator: randomly thinks the doors are open because the compressor is having to work too hard to maintain temperature which causes a beeping alarm that won’t stop, freezer drawer gets stuck sometimes, freezer light hasn’t worked in years, ice maker hasn’t worked in years, the “stainless steel” doors have a big section below the in-door water and ice dispenser that is rusted and flaking away (when the ice maker worked, it would often spit out a cube or two after the person walked away, which would sit in the little tray and melt, next person would open the door not noticing the water in the tray, causing the water to slosh onto the front, promoting rust).
Dishwasher: black kickplate has totally rusted away, rinse agent dispenser broke a long time ago and can’t be fixed, replaced control panel board once already and it needs it again (the lights to indicate which cycle it’s in or when it’s done don’t work).
Oven: 25 years old, exposed heating elements that burn drips, just basic (original with the house) and old.

1·1 month agoOur current refrigerator has a drawer freezer, and it causes problems. Ice cubes fall down to the bottom and prevent the drawer from closing all the way, the drawer sticks, and the light has long since stopped working.

4·1 month agoWhat I really wanted was a totally dumb and simple top-freezer model without an icemaker, counter-depth, but it just doesn’t seem to exist. Top-freezer models are inherently more energy-efficient. Everyone else in the house likes ice, filtered water, etc, so that’s what I went with.

13·1 month agoI think getting excited about appliances is very characteristic of being dull. It’s a club for dull men, not a dull club for men.

They’re great! Doc Marten’s chelsea boots have been my go-to for many years.
Gifted myself a new pocketknife.
Multi-tap is what you’re thinking of. T9 was the predictive algorithm, where you only had to hit each key once, so “fluent” could be entered as 358368.

18·6 months agoC’mon, IPv4 has so many problems. Sure, let’s reserve a whole /8 for a single loopback address, that’s efficient. 🙄

14·7 months agoSo they took out a TSP loan and tried to get out of paying it back. TSP is the US federal government employee savings plan, sobthis person is or was a federal employee or member of the military. You can get a loan against for savings, but the money is taken out of your account and if you don’t pay it back on schedule, it gets treated as an early withdrawal and subjected to income tax and early withdrawal penalty of 10%.

I’ve noticed that more things are using USB-C for DC connections, which is awesome and an unexpected side-benefit. Maybe someday I’ll be able to retire my universal DC power brick with its collection of barrel tips.
