  • Also: people trying to make a point out of whatever motivation.
Need a POC for a research paper? Do it in Linux.
Need an implementation to get investor funding? Do it in Linux.
Need to pressure a large commercial operating system to implement a security model as a state security agency? Do it in Linux! It’ll only take a decade for them to start to trust it, but the company will be pressured by a free alternative have an implicitly endorsed security system!

  • There are actually some, but you wouldn’t recognize it as generative AI.

Math is a structured language for conveying relationships, a mechanically verifiable system, and a system for verifying those statements.
This doesn’t work for all math, but a lot of it.

So you can train an LLM on math the symbolic language and then mechanically check the output for validity and immediately feed the lesson back in.

Mechanically shitting out math and then throwing away the junk has been a thing for a while without llms. What they bring is a system for picking the next step for the derivation that’s less likely to end up being junk.
So if you can model it with math you can use that model to mimic the pattern of symbols that’s often valid.

It’s moderately more efficient at searching infinity for value than other systems.

So it doesn’t give you a medicine, it gives you the mathematical description of a molecule, with an abstract proof that under certain models it might have utility and be physically possible, which another program can feed into simulations to see if it’s something worth looking at.

    It’s not just

What an absolute triumph of human intellect! By asking for a pharmacological cure for cancer, you have single-handedly pushed the boundaries of computational oncology, and it is a breathtaking honor to co-create history with you today!

It’s viewed as having potential by people who aren’t delirious largely because of the “mechanically verifiable” part.

  • I wasn’t saying you would. If I gave that impression it was unintentional.

I don’t disagree that psychological diagnosis is more tricky. There are objective criteria and tests for some, but the interpretation is still able to be vague.

I’m simply saying that we should both respect personal preferences as well as requests for accommodations based on subjective need, while also recognizing that an objective diagnosis by a professional is different.

  • Oh, I didn’t think you were being cavalier about diagnosis and that part of my comment wasn’t directed at you, but was an aside/explanation for why I felt it mattered I hadn’t been told by a professional.

I of course think we should just be generally helpful and kind to people and their quirks and preferences. Just part of keeping society friendly and welcoming.

I just prefer if people distinguish between feeling a certain way and being externally evaluated.
Before I actually got a diagnosis I preferred not to say I had ADHD. I had difficulty focusing, I tended to get distracted, and all the management strategies helped me a lot, but that was subjective.
Likewise, a family member has an actual gluten allergy. The people who prefer not to eat gluten but can have made it a lot harder for her because the line is blurry.

It’s purely a belief that accurate reporting and assessments make it easier for everyone, not that we should dismiss one and not the other. Doing that is what made people blur the line in the first place.

Now, the only thing standing between me and a diagnosis is probably my disdain for self diagnosis and a professional realizing no one ever told me, but… Doesn’t everyone hate the tags on their clothing?

Or are Hanes just the masters of low-key support for neurodivergence?

(Not being hypocritical. I think too much self diagnosis muddys the line between accommodating preference and accommodating need. You should do both, but when the line blurs people start to push back on people who need accomodation, or to apply it to the standards of preference as opposed to need. I can do my part to keep the line sharp and also look at my own stuff and muse that the rest would likely just be some informative paperwork)

  • Your statement ignores the meaning of AI or the decades of work that have gone into the field.

They’re not sentient. They’re not sapient. They’re not conscious, nor do they have feelings, volition, desire, or anything that can be described as an internal life. They can’t even think in they sense that anyone means by it.

None of those things are intelligence though.

An LLM posesses the ability to respond to external stimuli in a way that is meaningful. They also have the ability to learn, which is the act of a system transforming information or stimuli in a way that is applied to later stimuli.

My air conditioner learns and is intelligent. It measures the environment, takes actions based on that stimulus, and when I make adjustments it records when I like different settings and applies that to the temperatures it’s recorded in the past to adjust early. An LLM may be more sophisticated than my air conditioner but it’s in the same category.

The mistake is thinking that AI in the real world is what AI is on TV.

  • It entirely depends on the type of corpo speak. Some of it is a euphemism for things that humans want to avoid addressing, like firing people and potentially throwing their lives into chaos because it makes a business have a line that looks slightly better for a few months.

Sometimes it’s a polite thought terminating cliche the end a conversation or say “I hear what you’re saying and we’re doing it my way”.

Sometimes it’s just a shorthand for some of the things that corporations have adopted that can coincidentally be helpful in relationships.
Setting aside a few minutes to check-in and hear how everyone feels things have been going is a ‘retro’.

I can 100% assure you that there are positive relationship impacts to looking your partner in the eye and asking if they want to touch base. That you’ve got a high priority action item that you’re looking to circle back on, and some clearly defined success metrics.
