It’s originally a Japanese movie released in 1998, known as Ringu which an American remake came out in 2002 known as “The Ring”, have you seen the Japanese original prior to watching the US version of what’s supposedly meant to be an adaptation? If so, what are the differences between the original vs the remake? If you consider the US remake crap, why is that the case when comparing it to the original one?
I like the effort they put into the death face in the remake. I thought they were both pretty forgettable, but I’m not a big fan of horror. Everyone caught the second death face, when the mother recounts finding her daughter in the closet. There’s another one, during the cold open, but if you blinked or looked away, you’d miss it. The girl who died goes up the stairs and puts her hand on a door, then you get the title card, unless you didn’t blink, in which case you saw it switch to a POV inside the room, and rapidly zoom in on the door as she opens it, and her face turns green and elongates unnaturally. This particular image haunted me for a while. At one point I had a production still from the scene which is zoomed out a bit. The shot does not exist in the movie; it looks like it was a photograph somebody took on the set. Anyway, I don’t recall the original going that hard. Also, Daveigh Chase. She was adorable, so she was a tragic villain, not just a scary one. I think the remake humanised her a bit more. Otherwise, the remake felt “safe”, whereas Japanese horror from back then was kinda edgy and gritty.
