Except that the rich know who to bribe with campaign contributions.
Look at Ronald Reagan. As an actor, he was not a giant star. Plenty of folks got a higher salary. Reagan lucked into a job as spokesman for General Electric, at the time one of the biggest companies in the world. Reagan hung out with the big shots and introduced them to his Hollywood buddies; in return he got stock tips and investment opportunities that made him rich.
You’re middle class if you’re still working for your money. You’re rich when your money works for you.
A $5 million a year actor/athlete still has to work; they are also paying for their trainers, agents, dietitians, clothes etc. They are upper middle class.
A trust fund baby with an income of $1 million a year is the rich one. imho.
Dagwood222@lemm.eeto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How is spontaneous betting (as portrayed by comics and movies) supposed to work?8·20 days agoIn a neighborhood, everyone knows your name. If Joe the Plumber and Fred the Butcher make a bet, everyone has heard it, and the loser has to pay up, or be scorned.
In a bar, the bartender or server holds the bets and pays off the winner, and expects a cut of the pie as a sevice fee/tip.

Compare Angelina Jolie and Elizabeth Taylor, for example. On paper, Angelina is far wealthier, but in terms of day-to-day lifestyles, they are pretty comparable. Only the 0.01% of multi-billionaires have reaped any rewards.

High school kids used to be able to afford concert tickets, football games, and Broadway plays. That Phantom was a year’s salary for a school teacher; now the most expensive cars are twenty year’s salary. It’s not that the products are so much better; there’s a larger pool of very wealthy people. In 1960, if a man’s wife had a job they were considered ‘poor.’ Today, even professionals need two salaries to keep up with the Joneses

I’m not much of a fan of ‘inflation calculators.’
According to most of them, $1 million in 1960 is $10 million today. But if you look at the actual prices, it makes no sense. $1 million in 1960 would buy two mansions, a fleet of cars, a nice boat, and you’d have enough left over to invest and have an income for several lifetimes.

Which proves my point. People on the Left can separate fiction from reality. It’s folks on the Right who lose their minds over The Little Mermaid being Black.
I watched the show, and I look forward to Season 2.

If someone is dumb enough to be convinced green energy is bad because of this show, they are also dumb enough to forget all that as soon as they see the senior citizen trip to the strip club or when Billy Bob cuts off his finger to get out of the hospital faster.
By your logic, every one who has watched Brooklyn 99 or Law And Order loves the pol;ice.

It’s entertainment. If someone said that watching RuPaul’s Drag Race would automatically make people gay you’d laugh at them.
No one is going to start loving oil companies because of this show.

Landman on Paramount. One season so far. Peak Billy Bob Thornton as a Texas oil field boss, dealing with cartels, lawyers, and his deeply dysfunctional family.
Dagwood222@lemm.eeto Today I Learned (TIL)@lemmy.ca•TIL No Kings Protests were the 3rd Largest in US History32·23 days agoBy exactly using the MAGA the technique of, after ranting about blaming everybody else but yourself about all maner of problems, “asking” for others to provide solutions only to criticize them when given them, you’ve just proved what I suspected, so thanks for that.
You realize you’re literally describing exactly what you did. You demanded details then couldn’t come up with anything but a pipe dream.
And if I’m doing what MAGA did, what is the problem? Patton was the general the Germans feared the most, because he fought exactly the way they did.
And I love the last line. If I am the problem, what is the solution? Again, give me a lot of details.
Things like who is going to organize this general strike?
Dagwood222@lemm.eeto Today I Learned (TIL)@lemmy.ca•TIL No Kings Protests were the 3rd Largest in US History34·24 days agolol! You demand specifics and plans, and then throw out two words. “General strike.”
Details, please. Who is the leader? What is the date? What are your demands? How are you going to handle invalids and homebound folks who need food and meds delivered? Schools open or close?

What’s your plan? How do you propose to get Trump out? Be very specific.
