  • I liked the first couple seasons of SNW. Spock Amok had me in stitches and Pike is the captain we’ve needed for a while now.

Lower Decks is… frighteningly good as the seasons progress. Their ability to target and poke fun at Trek-tropes was better than any YT channel I’ve seen, yet they respected the source material and mimicked it with commensurately great ability. I was torn between laughing and crying while they did laps around DS9. (DS9 being my fav trek.) And I was genuinely surprised they got Jolene Blalock back given I thought she hated the franchise after her time in it. Even if the humour was more miss-than-hit for me early on in the series.

SGU was weird and originally felt like a BSG knockoff, but I loved their big sci-fi hook and wish we got to know what it was. (BIG spoiler for it below. It’s an old show but still. If you haven’t seen it don’t click.)

Pattern in the cmbr, really cool sci-fi idea

That said, most of SGU, aside from the early eps when critical offline systems were important, didn’t really land with me. High concept; poor execution.

Prodigy was the Voyager continuation we apparently all needed but didn’t know. (At least I didn’t.) Was glad to hear a lot of familiar voices in S2, reprised.

  • The show has plenty of issues but I’m sticking with it. I’m not blind to it’s faults nor do I hate it outright.

The ending to 5p1 was quite the ride. Good entertainment.

I think the Honest Trailer for it nailed a lot of the critiques, like the lengthy exposition dumps, but it’s not as trash as it’s made out to be. There were still some subtle takes in the show.

While D&D isn’t my preferred TTRPG I have enough experience with the older versions that Will becoming a Sorcerer was a good “in-joke”. Sorcerers, magic users in general, were dogshite for the first while in the early editions. But once they got access to 3rd levels spells they start their ascension towards a somewhat literal godhood. Will was kinda dogshite for the first four seasons, but now? Looks like he got to cast Fireball for the first time into a horde of Xvarts.

Holly, acting was great, and her costuming was… interesting.

  • I was a lil shit then so I’m sort of glad I wasn’t on usenet to embarrass myself but at the same time I feel like I missed out on something great I could’ve been in on. Having JMS there and bare to answer any questions would be amazing. (I say this as someone that’s had him answer my Q’s in reddit AMA’s a couple times. So at least I got that.)

I used to be a big proponent of the binge-release. But as time moves on I find myself more appreciative of the weekly releases lending itself to conversation. Particularly for the mystery-box shows.

Now I think of release format as a part of the artistry of the show itself. Arcane for example, releasing in segments of three by three and knowing ahead of time that that was how it’d be released, was a canny and smart way to do it. Similarly certain shows released (Like they used to) the first two episodes as a longer intro to the show then going to weekly is a smart idea too.

IMHO, it should be part of the showrunners consideration how a show is released, rather than up to the company that’s releasing it. It’s an artistic choice that can dramatically change how the show as a whole is perceived.

  • and the fact that it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb, is a testament to her pulling off the role well.

See, I’m not sure about that. Shouldn’t she be acting a bit strange?

I do get what you’re saying, she’s not doing it poorly which would stick out in a wholly different way. But it feels bland whereas it could be… I dunno, something more. I think the closest we’ve got to what I’m trying to describe is the we/I pronoun thing. There ought to be some janky mannerisms to her, no?
