Edgarallenpwn@midwest.socialto Leopards Ate My Face@lemmy.world•Explain it to me (sans facts).English14·3 months agoYesterday I type “what” into my search engine and within the top 5 was “what is a tariff”. Import tax would make too much sense and people wouldn’t stand behind it if it was referred to as such.
I get that tariff is the correct word and I understand what they are, but I am sure people like my dipshit cousins had no clue until a few days ago.

Edgarallenpwn@midwest.socialto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•*Permanently Deleted*English3·4 months agoThe Blue/Green tick thing has winded down in my own personal sphere. My wife’s family has a group chat where I was the only android user and would get dunked on when I replied. I just asked to be removed so they wouldn’t have to deal with SMS/MMS bullshit. Now that RCS is on everything it doesn’t matter. Ive been trying to get them to use Signal for the last few years but no one wants another app that isn’t their default messaging app.
On the second part, yeah thats true. If Apple does anything right it’s making “things work” for the average user, and I am sure we all know what the average user can do now. Any concerns I bring up with iOS is met with “but you work in IT and understand that stuff” which is hard to argue with when people just want something to work without troubleshooting and exploring options.

Our whole environment is Lenovo. I noticed at the end of last year that 2025s upcoming EOL refresh was going to be all thin laptop conversions.
But don’t worry guys, I can apply for 10 dollars less an hour to the new contractor they are bring on to delay the inevitable.

Edgarallenpwn@midwest.socialto Technology@lemmy.world•Itch.io games site taken downEnglish6·7 months agoMy mom got me my first one in 2019 or 2020 because she thought it was cute (Guyfolye from Silicon Valley). A few months later she asked me if they were just Beanie Babies and I thought that was the end of it. Now every Christmas I get one even though she knows I don’t like them and we both snark on the super niche weird ones. She even got custom ones for me and my wife last year. It never ends, and I have 6 sets of beady little eyes staring at me when I’m watching TV in the basement.

Needed a Linux test device at a job a few years ago and for some reason this was one of the only ones approved. Was pretty solid for the few times I needed to use it.
Edgarallenpwn@midwest.socialto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What good thing just happened in your life?English4·8 months agoIt really does lol. I wasn’t too concerned about this project and have been focusing on the next phase plus a few other projects in the pipeline, but knowing this really helped. My mom is having surgery tomorrow so I’ll have to take care of her for the next few days, plus my wife’s car was throwing some nasty codes that had me stressed. At least now I know work is in a good place as I take a few days off to take care of my mom and tinker with a car.
Edit: If anyone has any tips for doing a piston soak on a KIA 1.6L engine please let me know. I am not the most mechanically inclined but can follow instructions from repair docs and YouTube videos. My friend who usually helps with my repairs is busy this weekend, but has confidence in me to do this after watching/helping him with DIY repairs over the years. Plus I can justify buying tools lol
Edgarallenpwn@midwest.socialto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What good thing just happened in your life?English9·8 months agoEnd of life hardware replacement at work. Deadline for the project is in a few weeks. Our engineering team just sent out a new BIOS upgrade for devices that get them up to TPM 2.0 which is the main requirement for the project. We went from ~5 completions a week to under one now to stay on track. Wasn’t really too worried about it but it will make work a piece of cake for a little.

Sometimes calls work out in your favor. I’ve been sending emails and messages to a guy for a few days with no response over his new device and remote desktop issues. When I finally reached out, he was having work done at his house and had to keep stepping away to talk to the construction workers. Got to stretch a 30 minute fix into half a day of billable hours.
I would much rather him just follow the instructions on the email, but it’s an early Friday for me.
Edit: got to finish up some project work while on hold and now my day is free after hitting my magical ticket hours for the day. Fuck this job lol
Need to get my PC running again, or get a steam deck. Seems like the latter is more realistic at this point. I’ll keep it in mind!
Monster Hunter World was really the last game I really got into for that reason. If soulborne games are like that I might pick up the next one.
Both of the Joel Schumacher films are fun if you don’t take them seriously. They’re not perfect by any means, but I’ll throw them on every few years and have a good time. I can’t even remember the last time I watched the Burton films, besides clips of “Love that Joker”
