No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do people force themselves to write something, even if they're NOT inspired?
4·4 days agoI just got into a habit. I listen to the same few playlists, sit with my coffee in the same chair, keep distractions away from me (out of arm’s reach) and I write. It was hard to keep up for a while at first, but now it’s not so hard even on ‘off days’. Usually, I just turn those into revision days. I also take breaks so I don’t burn out, toooooooo hard.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•According to an MIT study, relying on ChatGPT for stuff like essays and creativity leads to cognitive atrophy and such. What should I do when writing stories without ChatGPT and other AI chatbots?
5·4 days agoI would get into fanfiction, both reading and writing. Places like Ao3 are so batshit insane, that they sort of force you to recalibrate creativity for yourself.
Just write for fun, don’t carry any baggage about turning it into something serious or long term. You’ll randomly get feedback to improve (some good and some bad) and soon you’ll recognize what you value in feedback and what you don’t.
You’ll also start recognizing stories that you like and that you don’t like. Use those moments as opportunities to really sit and figure out why you like and don’t like those stories. Imagine how you would improve them or write them differently.
Eventually, you’ll find that you have your own ideas, your own voice, and opinions on what makes a piece good or bad.

What is this thing?@lemmy.world•What critter made these marks?English
27·4 days agoYes! I loved snails so much as a kid, so I would collect them from the road when I walked to school and put them in the bushes outside of school grounds before the bell (I didn’t like the idea of them getting squished by traffic). I never really had a way to carry them so I’d just stick them on my arms or really wherever. Sometimes when I was putting them in the bushes, I’d notice just a teensy bit of blood on my arms where they were crawling around. I thought it was from the snails at first, but one time I kept a particularly fat snail on my hand and kinda watched him while I walked. He did the little chewing thing on the back of my hand for a bit and afterward, there was just a teensy bit of blood where he bit. The sensation was barely even noticeable, to be honest. A bit like a very tiny cat tongue—not really painful, just a bit scratchy.

37·4 days agoThat’s what I think, yeah. They move a little bit, then munch the ground sweeping left and right, then move a bit more. Their little mouths are like sandpaper, so they just rub away the green growth (I think, I’m not a snailologist, I just like snails and have been bit by them).
Edit: https://themarinedetective.com/2020/10/26/who-goes-there-scraping-marks-on-the-rocks/
This link isn’t gonna be suuuuper accurate because it’s marine mollusks that they’re looking at, but you can see the similarity in the marks. The radula would be the commonality between them, which is why I think snail/slug.

62·4 days agoSlugs or snails! It looks like the trail left after they munch on whatever was growing there with their little radulas. 🤭

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Microsoft Exec Suggests AI Agents Will Need to Buy Software Licenses - Business Insider
23·7 days agoOh, no. No way. Those fucks were trained on every single pubic human word written, all of our art, all of our labor—for free. These companies have lobbied the government to dodge regulation and avoid accountability this entire time. Ain’t no way I’m gonna let these companies avoid the heartache they put on others.
Oh darn, is your IP theft machine losing you money on software licenses? Fuck off.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why is it that when the graphics driver freaks out in your browser when watching a video, the page always turns this specific shade of green?
48·7 days agoI think it’s just because the answer doesn’t really contribute much. OP is asking about something specific (and kinda interesting, too!) and your response was “I don’t know, I don’t use that software”. It doesn’t really add to the conversation or help to answer the question.
Imagine if every question that got asked was responded to by the entire community, even if they had no answer, and every thread was just filled with “I dunno”.
No hate on you specifically, just thinking out loud a bit.

Comic Strips@lemmy.world•[Meta] Posting comics from transphobic artists?
16·8 days agoI think the problem with this kind of thing is that a new user coming by doesn’t get the benefit of all those blocks you accumulate. For you, it’s a curated forum of comics. For them, it’s a stream of whatever content wholesale.
What that usually means is that users who don’t like it don’t stick around, and users that do, stay. That’s how communities slide in different directions.
At least with Stonetoss (the one I’m familiar with), if I’d seen their comics here when I came to the platform, I would have simply left because I am aware of what type of audience consumes that person’s comics. You can guess the type that sticks around.
Is it weird to like this? I feel like this would be hella comfortable. Does it have buttons on the side for the fingers? Because that would be cool as hell.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•So a friend set me up with some resources.English
2·16 days agoI’m fairly certain the RAM is soldered and capped, but it has 16gb, so more than I could reasonably touch anyway. It has a 500gb soldered SSD, but I know there’s a slot for another. The only reason I wanna ‘start’ by getting a rack and hard drives is because I watched my friend lose his mind one weekend while he migrated multiple terabytes of data and he has since repeatedly recommended keeping the storage separate and plug and play, haha.
I’m 100% down to give all this a shot, though. As soon as I upgrade, this laptop is immediately getting recycled into the first step server (and very probably the final step unless something drastic changes in my life).

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•So a friend set me up with some resources.English
3·17 days agoThe unfortunate reality is ‘what I’ve got’ is a 6 year old laptop that represents 60% of my net worth. 😅 Hopefully soon that will change, but for now, I’m taking the free/borrowed friend’s setup.
My game plan in the future is just to turn this laptop and a couple hard drives, though. I think comments like yours and a couple others have convinced me I really don’t need to invest all that much to get started, or really finished with the setup.nif you’re running all that on 8gb of RAM, I think the only thing I’m missing is the storage.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•So a friend set me up with some resources.English
3·17 days agoMy friend shook me of any notion that I needed all that much, haha. I made a joke about getting a room set up for this and he shamed me by showing my resource use versus his. 🤣
Realistically, I think the only thing I’d ever end up needing is a ton of hard drives. That’s like… the biggest physical thing I need and as someone else in the thread pointed out there are some pretty solid smaller racks for that. My “starter” setup is going to be my current laptop when I upgrade in a year or so.
Edit: Whoa, that sounds like an incredible setup! All that is running fine on 16gb of RAM? Man, I really just need to do more reading about this so I can get a better sense of how all this works.

It’s an old joke. It was mocking parents of millennials who called every game system “a Gameboy” or “a Nintendo” and called protagonists of the game by the title, like Halo for Master Chief or Zelda for Link.
The joke is mostly played up. Most of the time adults just didn’t care or leaned into the cringe for fun, but that is my experience around it. Gaming has become so prolific since then that the joke has been beaten into the ground and resurrected elsewhere (see streamers calling their characters John Ring for Elden Ring or John Halo, as examples).
It’s just a silly joke about people not knowing about games. You can see other, similar, humor in people calling Tim Cook ‘Tim Apple’ for example, but that obviously has different origins, it’s just kind of a similar idea.
