I haven’t lived in the US for a few decades now, so I might definitely be off for some!

American tipping culture is so arbitrary though. You tip your taxi driver but not your bus driver. You tip at a coffee shop but not at a fast food shop. Your hairdresser gets a tip but not the people looking after your children.
I am pretty sure that the Britannica is not an American publication.

All tortoises are in fact turtles
3 minutes? In many places that’s called “on time”. 😅
I’m a foreigner and the last time I was in Germany it ended up being a nightmare of delays and me running across stations desperately trying to get out of Germany.
The last time I was in the UK a train left 2 minutes early. I was already on, but found this shocking. I can hardly imagine my white hot rage if I was running for the train and it left early.

2·16 days agoI use Jottacloud for off site restic backups. You have to use rclone, but it’s not too tricky. I don’t know how well it works outside of Europe. It’s cheap and can store terabytes of data!

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What to do after getting a domain name?English
1·21 days agoUsing some very basic security, like minimal services and keeping stuff patched and having backups, and you’re probably fine. I’ve run stuff locally at home for decades and never had a security issue as far as I know. (I did have a problem with a hosted server that I shared with some friends 20 years ago, because at that time updating Fedora was a hassle and we let it get behind on updates.)

4·21 days agoYour eu.cc domains are fine. You don’t need to spend money on a 2nd-level domain if you’re happy with the longer name.
For comparison, I’ve had a nl.eu.org domain for decades, and never had any issues. I also had a number of .tk domains for a while and those all went away when the business managing the domain got sued out of existence. I currently use nom.es domains for various tests.
Huh. With my impacted wisdom tooth they just broke it in half with a hammer and then twisted the pieces out with some calipers. The anesthesia was good, so I didn’t feel pain, but the crunching and scraping sounds were… off-putting.

5·29 days agoIn the late Middle Ages some scholars argued that there could not be humans in the southern hemisphere… a.k.a. antipodes
The idea was that it gets hotter and hotter as you go further south. Eventually it would get too hot for people to survive, certainly at the equator. So you can’t cross to the temperate parts of the southern hemisphere.
The Bible doesn’t mention creating any other people on the other side of the planet, and none can get there from the northern hemisphere, so therefore they must not exist. Q.E.D.

I mean, the pull requests will arrive.
Especially if they are security related, even if only 5% are anything, that’s still quite a few actual bugs. 😞
