Car company’s have been doing it for decades. There are legitimate reasoning; theft relevant parts for instance; you don’t want to enable vehicle theft and the “security through obscurity” model did work for a long time. Unfortunately for the manufacturers, most factory security systems are being cracked by locksmiths and vehicle rebirthers.

Another reason is for warranty claims. The manufacturer builds the cars to be the right balance of price, reliability, efficiency and performance. If you modify your vehicles ECU software, the engine may not be as reliable or efficient. If an “unauthorised repairer” changed the programming of the ECU, it can compromise the efficiency and reliability of the vehicle.

There are been plenty of accusations of “planned obsolescence” because a vehicle has died just out of the warranty period, after someone has fucked with the vehicle tuning.

Finally, the other reason, especially for Volume Manufacturers is that their vehicles are sold as a Loss Leader so they can make up the shortfall through aftersales. Some vehicle importers make deals with governments to lower tariffs on new vehicles, but increase tariffs on genuine parts, like what the Japanese industry and the Australian Government made in the 1980s.

Whether you agree with this logic is irrelevant; this is the reasoning manufacturers use for restricting aftermarket parts and labour.

When a “free-market” Aftermarket Aftersales industry causes the Genuine Aftersales industry to fail, Manufacturers will try to make up any losses through other channels, like requesting government subsidies “for the good of the local industry” or selling telematics data (which just “happens” to have personal user data) to data brokers.

CarPlay (and Android Auto) are designed to only interact with the InCar Entertainment hardware as a display, HID input and limited ancillary hardware. It pushes Video to the display and pulls GPS data, Voice, touch and button inputs. Apple actually dictate that the ICE system cannot store any data except connectivity (Bluetooth connection keys), everything else stays on device.

I am not going to go as far as say that OEM and aftermarket ICE aren’t able to extract information through CarPlay, and I will acknowledge that they will try to get user data through their own interfaces for the benefit of their own interfaces. I would never trust an OEM that forces users to not use CarPlay or Android Auto (ehem, GM).

I am confident that the only reason GM are introducing their ICE platform (codenamed “Edsel”) and blocking CarPlay and Android Auto is because they believe they will be able to profit from selling user information to data brokers. I am also confident that Edsel will be just as disastrous for GM as its namesake was for Ford.

If Apple really wanted to send a message, they would suspend the Twitter App (I can’t bring myself to call it by the stupid CyberTruck name) from the App Store.

If you don’t have backups of your data and have not disabled their default security features, you have no chance of restoring your data in the case of device failure. If you die and don’t give permission for your loved ones to access your data, that data is lost.

You are correct, but it is also the most recognisable In Car Entertainment interface. If they used a stock photo of Android Auto, it would not be recognised. If they used a stock photo of MBUX or BMW iDrive or any of the hundreds of In Car Entertainment interfaces, they wouldn’t be recognised either.

By inferring that CarPlay was responsible for exploiting privacy, it attracts Apple Apologists, Android Apologists, both ignorant and educated technologists and the general public, especially after the amount of effort Apple put into protecting user privacy.
