Adding to what that other person said, not all pearls are perfectly round, and even rarer are black pearls. Because of that, they can be used as a symbol of status. Its a bit more interesting in case of diamonds (and im a bit more sure in what I know, but its a similar process), because they have multiple fascinating uses (diamond saws, pretty sure drill heads too, lasers), but the status aspect really dominates what really makes them expensive. There are a lot of diamonds out there, but jewelry corporations want you to care only about the natural ones with little imperfections (synthetic diamonds have a lot less imperfections, but its harder to control the supply of those, so you are told they suck). So a decent part of it is corporations upholding either tradition or old marketing, whichever you prefer and like in many cases, the intuitive answer is “look pretty” but the real one is politics

Science Memes@mander.xyz•This figure illustration from an article on AI sycophancy and human behavior is the epitome of 2026English
16·5 months agoThe study compares rate of sycophancy of AI compared to human responses, the point is not to say only AI does it, it is to say that it focuses on pleasing more than actual humans do and that has adverse effects
It does not say humans are good at it, but that AI is worse
Cacti and carnivorous plants are super cool tho??? Especially that you get cacti cuz of how resilient they are, a great first plant, can recommend. And growing your own food/spices as well? Also Ive never seen that stereotype lmao
I love how this meme evolved beyond the context of the scene into Jesse sharing just some random but factually true trivia

Im sorry, but that’s just not the reason you would give up on a lamp, unless you are using some weird new tech bullshit. A lamp is two wires (sometimes three), a special lightbulb socket, a switch (technically in my own experience optional, but I was being a bit stupid, fixed it tho) and thats it. Its more complicated for LEDs, but we got led lightbulbs already, everything that could break is within that. Ive went through a couple of lamps and the reason Ive thrown them out was in most cases the plastic casing breaking. Sometimes the electric isolation gets worn down exposing a live wire - you throw that out because that’s a health and fire hazard. Rarely there is a problem with the connectors, but in the one and only case Ive seen that makes the light dim, unstable, and emits a constant buzz. Obviously bad, technically functional. Overall a lamp is pretty much the very simplest house appliance youve got, and because of that the points of failure are limited
