I’ve seen them work on Freetube in the past although idk how, and maybe they no longer do

I had my mom on Ubuntu for most of the 2010’s, and then the macbook it was on had catastrophic hard drive failure around the pandemic, but then I was like, you don’t work anymore, why exactly do you NEED a computer to begin with? So now she literally doesn’t have a computer and just lives mobile/tablet OS life, which in a nonprofessional context seems perfectly serviceable these days.
I am legit confused about this outrage, ELI5, please… I am legit not arguing in bad faith and am seriously confused, but I did not google your thing because I am lazy and don’t care if this meme is some cancelled thing I was arguing the underlying point that as per Kuhn, Scientific stuff is within a cultural/economic/geographical, yada yada like all human activity
The fact that you are this thorny about besmirching the name of Science in vain is sooooo telling.
Yes, I agree, it is not Science as per The Enlightenment, what I as a pedant, call inductive reasoning, but when Neil goes out there telling you to wear a mask, is that backed by Science™, unless he’s taking Science’s name in vain (he was)? Science is inductively reasoned truth to what extent it is truth, and the very people who want to lecture us about Science™ want to throw things at the wall intuitively like shamen to calm us, and dictate what we should know for fear of our behavior, like an unordained Sangha using effective means to guide children
Edit disclaimer: I’m in no way antivax, I had em all you should too, and especially kids, but those are legit 95% certainty PROPER science as per claimed efficacy
In what regard? Is this trolling? I am legitimately confused, which leads me to think you’re one of the abusive Cheney Dems on this platform, but I am open to other interpretations if you provide me room for that…
I’m not trying to take a side in some weird internet flat earther thing, I’m just saying like Thomas Kuhn has a point in Structure of Scientific Revolutions… I’m not a Lacannian, but based on the one Slavoj Zizek talk I saw in grad school about his triad of reality, my understanding is he also had pretty good points about the inherent unreliability of second order reality, which is inherently run by some manner of corruptible authority, that addresses the same concern that research can be institutionally tainted and biased by the structures within which they exist… Capitalism is provably directly producing unscientific research at research institutions, especially in health contexts that have the most direct impact on people materially… Just look at the Perdue Oxycontin studies.
Why is it a strawman? Are you saying that doesn’t happen? I’ve read a fair number of respectable sources saying it does. If not, where do the “study shows coffee causes cancer” and “study shows coffee cures cancer” articles come from? Are you just being contrarian, because Science™ is now a blue MAGA v original flavor MAGA political thing? What’s the angle here?
I would beg to differ. There is a THOU MUST PUBLISH OR STARVE ethos in modern research, which is directly incentivized on both sides by capitalism – researchers want to eat and pay rent and institutions want to be fancy so rich people bribe them to let their kids in. This has led to it becoming common place to do a study and THEN form your hypothesis, which is just not science. That’s how you get so many “chocolate cures ass cancer!” headlines. Somone is researching if chocolate blocks a protein you never heard of, it doesn’t, but through the magic of random sampling, this set of subjects had a low rate of cancer in five years so, we’re publishing that even though that’s NOT how science works. You’re identifying quirks of sample sets, not challenging hypotheses because of the direct intervention of capitalist incentives.
Polish could be a hard lift, especially for a VERY unpopular series… Maybe one of the saved Google searches on the megathread? Sometimes you can find VERY obscure things with that, but good luck having seeds by some miracle…
This! I imagine this guy has every paid service this could have been on, but then you need to sleuth what it’s on. Easier to go to a one stop shop, which with sports in the US is gonna be pirate because the deals for who airs what is insane. Even if it was on Fox, it would take non-0 effort to determine that, open your Hulu with live TV or YouTube TV, maybe it was only available live and you failed to fake DVR it…
I had issues getting kernel versions on Debian seeing hard drives back when it got bad in the 2010’s (which is why I switched to Fedora, which was what I used as my primary distro before Debian). For experimental purposes, I’d try something with bleeding edge driver support like Fedora, not even to install, just to see if it sees the drive. I’ve even seen issues with kernel v various hardware things on Ubuntu/Mint v Fedora. I am currently very mad at Fedora because 40 is ass, and I’m having PTSD about Debian getting bad (I do hear it gud now) so I’m in no way recommending Fedora rn, but it will see the hardware if it’s a nonproprietary driver newness issue
Yeah, my parents are getting to the nursing home stage and last week my dad tells me he just has this basically new old stock giant 2000’s Trinitron CRT that’s been basically unused and sitting in a cupboard for 20 years and I was like “Do not throw that away, I’ll put it in storage when you need it gone!” I live in a tiny apartment and thus have nowhere to put it, but I’d rather keep it in unused storage I’m paying for anyway or sell it online or something than reduce the net stock of high quality late CRTs out there. So many gems rotting in attics only to be thrown away when people move out there…
Asheville isn’t even prone to hurricanes, it’s inland in the mountains, people literally moved there from Louisiana and Florida on the premise it would be safer, but… Post-global warming you can even get cyclones on the great lakes (happened in '96) and the Southwest desert can get monsoons… Waterproof electronics bunkers, maybe?
Same, fucking catastrophe. I wonder how many “only 100 good condition of these are left in existence” things got destroyed. We need an Endangered Species Act for weird retro tech or something.
Yeah, but it was all Kazaa and Limewire life until like… 2006-ish
Yeah, you’re risking a bad experience with the pi. You can probably get a cheap PC sans OS on eBay with a real drive. SD cards just crap out in an instant at random, so if your whole OS is on one… One day he’s gonna turn it on and EVERYTHING will be gone. Every SD card I’ve ever relied on for OS purposes in a Pi or Android situation has just died within a few years.
I ran OS/2 Warp as my primary for like a year, I loved it, and it could even play many Windows/DOS games with fiddling
There was still real competition in the x86 OS space back then, also. Like IBM had OS/2 and DOS 7, and made hardware, so they certainly wouldn’t want it locked to a Microsoft OS.
I’d consider a Pixel with GrapheneOS, not Linux per se, but with FDroid it’s probably the best FOSS tablet experience
Anything I need to actually write code on, Gnome, because I’m addicted to mac-style gesture controls, but hate the holier than thou design philosophy Jony Ive bullshit; anything casual, KDE; but I am planning to try out Cosmic on something soon
