Just to clarify, is this Linux foundation in charge of the kernel? I’m not sure how the chain of command goes over there.

Just to clarify, is this Linux foundation in charge of the kernel? I’m not sure how the chain of command goes over there.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean for my other response to read like it does!

Omg I just realized how my comment comes off. I was saying “you” as in “hypothetical person who thinks this way” fuck
I’m trying to agree with that comment, while adding that yeah, its often the only thing that gets through their skulls, and it ticks me off too. There are so many other (and frankly more important) reasons that “generative” AI is horrible.

Every time I hear someone mourn the loss of menial fast food jobs and shit to AI, my brain looses another 5000 cells. Missing the point. You are missing the whole fucking point. I’d rather you be pro-AI so I could just tell you to fuck off and think no more of it.

Lol as if I didn’t hear you out. At this point anyone could present any point against “generative” AI and you’d find a way to say “but if it produces something that works”.
At least, that’s how you’ve come off. I know I’m being abrasive, but I genuinely don’t wanna believe people think like that, and I don’t enjoy fighting like this.
When tedious tasks can be automated without using tech made by fascists for fascists, I’ll be all over that. Until then, its pretty hard to defend.

So this person prompt injected to figure out which submissions were bots, found out, and instead of taking a firm stance against this practice they’re gonna… try and “make use” of all the bot submissions… sighhhhh oh my fucking God how many more times am I going to see these similar brain dead arguments? I can’t take it anymore.

“What about the foundation is rotten, in your view? The fact that it’s based on other people’s work being regurgitated, or the environmental concerns, or how big tech is trying to leverage it to be an arbiter of knowledge and computing power? All are valid concerns, but they don’t mean the technology is inherently unusable or unethical.”
It literally does. There’s no point in this discussion if we’re disagreeing over something so fundamental.

Mental gymnastics? I can’t fathom how people keep finding new reasons and justifications for using such fundamentally evil technology. Its not that there’s no nuance to be had in the conversation, but any positive uses are purely theoretical at this point, because they can’t be realized with the technology in its current state.
“Guys guys guys, I know the tech was built with fundamentally horrible intentions and is trained on nothing but stolen work and is killing the planet and yada yada yada but if we’re just aware of its limitations and use it for good… somehow… it’s totally not useless.”

God the “luddite” thing is so bad faith and just objectively incorrect.

Please inform me.

I knew I shouldn’t have used that analogy, because then the focus would be redirected to it and I’d end up defending it instead of the position it was meant to represent.
I’ve said what I intended to say. I don’t wanna argue over the uses of AI when its the foundation itself that’s rotten. There’s no good way to make use of “gen” AI as it stands.

I’m sorry, but no matter how many times I hear this argument, it never addresses the issues with AI that exist regardless of its usecase. There are plenty of other unacceptable things in this world that we apply strict bans to. No, it will never rid the world of the issue, but that doesn’t mean you concede to “appropriate” uses of the maliciously envisioned technology. Someone in the world will always be hungry, but that doesn’t mean we settle for mostly eradicating world hunger, we try to do all we can.
No amount of “but it’s for a good purpose” with erase the issues inherent to LLMs and “generative” AI. I like the idea of pure tedium being automated in the future, but so long as its based on the this tech as it currently exists, any genuine attempt to make create something positive is a non-starter. I’m not a “luddite”, I don’t hate progress or new ideas, I simply refuse to support projects that rub shoulders with hyper-capitalist theft machines that destroy the planet.

Its different but no better. Its still AI slop, just human reviewed AI slop.

I’m glad I moved to PieFed a few months after joining Lemmy. Tankies have no real values and will claim to be radicals while holding no better values then our oppressors.
Is machine learning the problem, though? Like, if someone wrote a program for automating subtitle creation, or at least helping with the tedious aspects of it, and it improved the more you used it, would that be an issue on it’s own? I think that’s why people differentiate between AI, LLM, and ML, because we need ways to distinguish tech that’s being misused/is harmful in it’s current forms vs. tech that is inherently evil in concept alone.
It’s confusing bc nobody fully understands which terms refers to what, myself included, so everyone uses each term for the wrong thing.
It amazes me how people will go out of their way to defend “gen” AI and LLMs, especially on a decentralized platform that aims to divert power away from the wealthy and their proprietary platforms. Does the boot taste that good?

There aren’t better ways, not in their current forms.

Indeed has something like that now? It’s bad enough that empolyers use this shit to write the job descriptions, then use it to reject our resumes without reading them, but now the job hosting site itself is shoving it down our throats.
“Hey, I got an idea how we can stop this worsening of the already inherently flawed job market. Let’s fight fire with fire, grease fires with water, and napalm with more napalm! Works every time.”
You have got to be fucking kidding me.
Its so insane considering Linux and FLOSS is supposed to take power away from big tech. Its just so hypocritical.
