As an American, our bell was tolling long ago and so few of us cared to listen. (This is a quote from Carl Sagan’s book from nearly 20 years ago).
“I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness…
The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance”
America is likely now doomed. We’ll balkanize into minor states that join either the axis or allies of WWIII until we mostly dissolve altogether and the next wave of history and death and rolls through. Though seeing the rise of fascism on the world scale, I think we’re generally just doomed, all of us. Perhaps we’re just an avenue for AGI to wipe us out and go fight other AGIs on some intergalactic scale not much different from our own inability to get along and work together. Perhaps I’ve been drinking myself to stupor now that I see what has happened.
Ironically in dunkey’s revisited review he talks about how if the game was only focused on deliveries, and reconnecting the world after some event, and not beaches and BTs and bridge babies and all the wild stuff it would be a better game. But then it wouldn’t be a Kojima game

The Register has been referring to Google as The Chocolate Factory for almost 10 years. As to why, probably because of google’s confectionary named Android releases, which they stopped at Android 10

Ah that’s disappointing to hear. And also probably extends my point that now warhorse has grown, and their execs are making bad calls that I’m sure the devs would choose not to make
Agreed, I’m always saddened by quotes like “well the devs should have” when it’s almost certainly “the execs should have.” Unless a studio is owned by its devs, or they make up some of its leadership, which are few and far between, the devs don’t have the say on the shitty things that happen to the product they’re working on, and often when the devs have more say you end up with like Kingdom Come Deliverance from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhorse_Studios. One of my favorite games, was supported by the studio for long after it came out, and now they’re working on a promising sequel
I mean people are, you know people are asking about the photo folks. Oh my god are they asking about the photo. Over and over, and people are saying folks, let me tell you. Nobody is asking about what’s going on in the White House right now. Nobody, is, asking.
Nobody wants to ask. You know why? You know what sleepy Joe and Kamala are doing in the White House? Right now? As I type this message on lemmy and with minimal effort trying to imitate Trump they are doing crazy things.
They are bringing insane asylums into the US. I don’t know what an asylum seeker is, but we’ll get to the bottom of it.
We just don’t have to listen to the hype about it anymore.
True, it’s now in most circles just been mixed in as a commodity to trade on. Though I wish everyone would get that. There’s still plenty of idiots with .eth usernames who think there’s some new boon to be made. The only “apps” built on crypto networks were and are purely for trading crypto, I’ve never seen any real tangible benefit to society come out of it. It’s still used plenty for money laundering, but regulators are (slowly) catching up. And it’s still by far the easiest way to demonstrate what happens to unregulated markets.
One man’s trash is actually that same man’s server, now
Transformer, when it explodes, avert your eyes!
(Seriously though, the arc flash of a failing transformer can cause blindness)
lol this is literally the same conversation happening elsewhere on the internet about Diddy. There’s a video of him abusing someone. “Stop speculating, we don’t know the whole story.” Speculation is claiming there’s anything beyond a video of him abusing someone. It’s wild how much people love their celebrities to the point of abandoning all logic to defend them.
Everyone has a spot on the big food pyramid of the socio-political hierarchy. Good, smart, and hardworking people of merit make their way to the top. Bad, dumb, and lazy people go to the bottom. For convenience sake, this hierarchy is color-coded. In a zero-sum world, everyone who gets to the top has to knock someone down a rung to make room.
I would argue this is how republican voters think. That they’re in the right because they are voting for the right of the individual. But on the other hand I think Republican policy makers give zero shits about a person’s self worth and actualization but rather they know that they need to feed the machine and we need the poor babies born to do so, and on the other hand they can demonstrate some form of moral high ground by deciding life and death.
There’s no death penalty for defrauding elections, molding the healthcare (or really any corporate) system to work for harm and profit, avoiding taxation through infinite shell companies and offshore bank accounts. Those things are celebrated as “beating the system”
Still to this day everyone that claims “Plandemic” is chasing some invisible elite power structure that somehow only includes democrats, without ever getting mad at the corporations that profited immensely off developing covid vaccines and charging market price for them as a portion of the world was dying.
It sounds like in this transaction they are purely a hardware provider, they shipped the bespoke hardware to Twitter based on twitters order, musk took over, and is now refusing to pay them because he doesn’t want whatever the hardware is after having gutted Twitter, and they haven’t been paid
“The components used to build the products are largely unique to the products, resulting in long lead times for ordering such component parts from suppliers,” and Twitter must give “written approval for Wiwynn to purchase the necessary components to manufacture the customer products…and expressly assumed liabilities for the procurement costs.”
So basically they were bespoke servers that are great for Twitter, custom designed, and definitely aren’t easy to just resell elsewhere, so because Twitter isn’t paying, the IT company is eating the loss right now
Money says this case is never heard
Considering how many kids get into Ivy League schools purely because of who their parents are and/or how much money they donate, you’re most certainly right
Yes, this is a great example of where ipfs would work (specifically for file hosting, not necessarily for the actual web interface), and also, no ipfs is not a blockchain, and it shouldn’t be. I thought we were past the whole “can this be a blockchain” thing, but here we are. Blockchain is cool tech. It’s also incredibly inefficient for anything beyond a transaction ledger, or in today’s case, money laundering and trying to avoid taxes and regulation.
Yup. A big issue is the system has been rigged against us for so long. Wages haven’t increased as rent, houses, groceries, transportation, education and everything else have gone up in price. So as Sagan said, people want to “feel good” by believing a “down to earth guy” who isn’t formal, doesn’t look like the establishment will fix it.
Trump and his cronies have made themselves out to be the good guys, that will tear down the systems that are causing hardship, when they are the exact elites that has built this system and want to further it. Fascism works best with an unseen and/or misdirected enemy and uneducated population, and it’s clear. It’s the gays/independent women/migrants/minorities. It’s those who are “different.”
They’re part of that unseen enemy that keeps making thing worse. And for the idiots it feels good for them to drink beers together and complain about grocery store prices and say “fuck Biden.” Instead of “have you guys seen congressional proposals to limit increases to grocery prices?”
