3·6 days agoThe American oil barons promoted American style culture and a disdain for Albertan history and cultures. Most of the rig pigs and truckers didn’t know any better, they weren’t from around here. Now 25-30% of the province doesn’t even identify as Canadian.
I call them IRS fugitives who also import their own scum culture and pollute.

Technology@lemmy.world•"Rising cost of memory," Microsoft explains why Windows 11 will use less RAMEnglish
32·6 days agoSome devs in the big corpos got spoiled with so much memory, with feature creep they managed to bloat up once reliable programs.
In 1994 and when I began compsci, I remember how memory and bandwidth conservation was then taken so seriously, where performance was a high consideration over eyecandy (at the time, PCs were still 386s, 486s and some Pentiums coming out, and most I used had either 1mb or 4mb of memory available). That I once got hold of Creating Killer Websites (yeah, that book), which included a section on how to slim down images to make them download faster, as at the time nearly everyone were on dialup. Videogames were then equally small, they were mostly sprite-based and were easily fit into a CDROM, as other games had basic vector graphics and low-resolution texturing.

I hate the purported FOMO those bastards always promote to wide-eyed numbskulls wanting to be on the cutting edge of anything. Or mobsters wanting to get their money either laundered or splurge onto the most absurd.

4·9 days agoJapanese people can just take the train
Given the rate of how many railway lines in Japan are being closed year after year due to falling ridership and increasing operational costs, buses and busways are supplanting the railways, and even then their timetables are also limited. Which leaves either an informal taxi service or caregivers having to do the driving for them, if they cannot be convinced to move to a care facility.
As I said in another comment elsewhere, the increasing frequency of accidents involving elderly drivers in Japan have become a serious talking point among Japanese, the popular consensus being the idea of placing more restrictions to such drivers, such as more driving examinations and how long before those drivers are no longer licensed to drive.

2·9 days agoI don’t think it’s the train drivers but the passengers, especially come rush hour where the squeeze can be awful at the big Tokyo stations.
And yeah, level crossings can also be dangerous for drivers with poor perception and timing, they’ll just try to drive through thinking they can beat the train.
