But i still think C++ has more footguns than Prolog.
You can just not git add the one file on the secondary drive when it is not connected. This schould not be that much overhead and (at least for me) it is much simpler than any other solution. Ps: Why do you want that one config file on the external drive and not on the main one?

This is not true. League of Legends works on linux via proton (for ease of installing use lutris)
you can even have a case where you return the first element of the list if the list is not empty, and it will still be O(1).
It also only works for the main module and only until you hit the recursion limit.
