You’re confusing OpenOffice (dead project pretty much, hasn’t seen updates in ages) with OnlyOffice (the Russian one with the licensing shenanigans and “AI first” stuff, UI is M365-like and very similar to the LibreOffice “Tabbed” UI)
Hi, I’m sbird! I like programming and am interested in Astrophysics and all things space. I also have a hobby of photography.

I haven’t used any of them in ages, I know Collabora is focused on their online suite. Looking at OnlyOffice’s website, they are positioning themselves as an “AI-first” office suite (the LLM tools have been changed to be optional and installed separately since a recent update, but still a bad look)
And WPS Office was always owned by a Chinese company and continues to be closed-source, so no changes there. Again, the same sort of “AI-first” stuff on their homepage, yikes
LibreOffice, not OpenOffice. I believe LibreOffice was forked from OpenOffice, and the latter hasn’t had any updates in ages.
I imagine that the UI you selected was the one of the “compact” or “single toolbar” options? It is a little confusing that some of the one functions disappear with those, it would be helpful if it was listed which ones were missing
It’s never that MS Office files don’t work on LibreOffice (formatting is a little different but almost never broken), it’s always files exported from LibreOffice that MS Office misreads (because Microsoft
can’t be bothered to follow standardsare anti-competitive)
Apparently it looks identical to MS Office, so it isn’t “better” than MS Office or LibreOffice in a functional sense (arguably less so since it’s probably very buggy code)
I wouldn’t say it’s people (normal people would be using MS Office or LibreOffice most likely) excited that it’s LLM generated, though some AI Bros probably are, I imagine some outlets are promoting this to sell whatever the new model is these days. And when there is a lot of news around a topic, it’s covered by more and more people (something about all press is good press here)
LibreOffice is an awesome piece of kit! On setup, they let you select the “tabbed” UI if you prefer something closer to MS office.
Collabora Office is another one that seems neat, have not used it before though. OnlyOffice has weird Russian ties and GPL incompatible licensing shenanigans, I would avoid them for the most part. WPS Office has the best compatibility with MS Office files on Linux I think, but it’s closed-source so not great either. There’s always running a VM / dual booting if you must use MS Office.
Honestly, MS office files have worked fine on LibreOffice, the only big issue I’ve found is that translucent images are a little broken when going from Impress to PowerPoint (all images share the same opacity for some reason?)

Android@lemmy.world•For those who have used and know about Droid Deck, Game Native and WinlatorEnglish
5·2 days agoI have used GameNative and it works okay, but I don’t have a Snapdragon device so it doesn’t have the best results. I know there are lots of videos on Droid Deck on Android handhelds with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and indie titles run fine for the most part. Have not tried it myself though, but it seems neat and will only improve from now!

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How come the bacteria that make people obese don't seem to be affecting countries where there's widespread famine?English
3·4 days agoThe bacteria don’t produce calories out of thin air, even high school physics will teach you that energy needs to be conserved!
I didn’t do biology, but from my understanding, energy (mostly) comes from the food you eat, and any excess is stored as fat. Obesity occurs when you have too much of that excess where it is a health risk, and differs depending on your metabolism and that sort (which things like gut bacteria can change because of weird biology shenanigans, don’t ask me, I’m a physicist).
But if there is no food, then you don’t intake any energy. Famine is defined as the widespread lack of food (by natural or artificial causes, unfortunately it’s often the latter), and when you don’t have food, you don’t tend to have high obesity rates.

1·6 days agoRetro games are awesome! Relatively affordable and you don’t need expensive hardware to play them (whether you’re playing natively or emulated!), and arguably more fun than modern titles since there aren’t any forced online shenanigans

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Tech hobbyists, How are you avoiding the crazy prices for computers and newer tech?English
2·6 days agoI believe those are usually done by modifying an existing ROM, but there are tools to make games from scratch too I think, at least for GBA. It’s pretty neat! The cartridges do have size limits, so if your game / ROM hack is particularly large it might not be ideal, but it’s cool that you can play modern-ish games on an OG GBA (most people emulate nowadays, but lots of people still have original hardware!)

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What are we calling the Middle East these days and why? West Asia???English
1·9 days agoI think the tectonic plates have helped to make natural boundaries that create such difference in culture, in particular the Indian region (incl. Pakistan, Bangladesh) is vastly different from the other side of the Himalayas, of course still linked, but culture is very different!
Same goes with the Carribean, Arabia, etc.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do the people claiming the X2 causes brain bleeds explain why every other rollercoaster isn't also causing fatal brain bleeds?English
2·9 days agoOther factors might include the design of the car (how it distributes the force, for instance), the rails (friction, tolerances, etc.), or the environment (decorations around the roller coaster, lighting effects, sound, etc.)

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do the people claiming the X2 causes brain bleeds explain why every other rollercoaster isn't also causing fatal brain bleeds?English
7·9 days agoAs it turns out, there’s a lot more factors towards the safety of a rolls coaster asides from peak force. Mainly, you have swift changes in force due to rapid changes in speed or direction. A gradual increase in force is safer than a quick burst!

Buy it for Life@slrpnk.net•This vertical mouse is pretty neatEnglish
2·9 days agoNo, the design is not the same. The shape is different and, more importantly, the angle is also different!
Yes, I did mention alternative software for Logitech mice! Solaar looks awesome if you have a Logitech mouse. The mouse I mentioned can also switch between 3 devices, I think that’s a pretty common feature on most mice nowadays.
Definitely more of a hassle to replace the battery, but good to see it’s somewhat replaceable at least. AA batteries are a lot easier to replace though, you don’t need to pry out the mouse feet and it’s much quicker to swap it out when it runs out!
Rubber will wear out faster than a normal plastic finish, but if it has lasted for your hands that’s good too! I’ve just heard lots of people, particularly in humid climates, where the rubber disintegrates quickly. I’m from HK so humidity is a big issue, so this mouse isn’t a good option for me (if you live somewhere drier, it could be neat!)
And again, the one I have is really neat too with the fun colours (!!!) and magnetic grip thingy. The shape is more comfortable for me too, but hey our hands are all different

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What are we calling the Middle East these days and why? West Asia???English
4·9 days agoWell yeah, the Russians teach just one continent, Eurasia. A few other places do that too I think, mostly those who were influenced by the Russians in the past (i.e. were part of the Russian Empire and/or the USSR’s sphere of influence)
And I know many Latin American countries teach a unified continent of America rather than splitting it North and South.
Egpyt does not combine Asia and Africa despite having the Sinai peninsula in Asia (which is only split by a manmade canal)
Personally, I’m a fan of defining continents geologically, since it gets rid of all the politics

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What are we calling the Middle East these days and why? West Asia???English
13·9 days agoMiddle East and West Asia are both terms that can be used kind of interchangeably, it just depends on the context. And yes, Europe is a glorified peninsula of the continent of “Eurasia”. Interestingly, Russia and a few other countries that straddle the boundary of Europe and Asia teach it as one continent.
In my opinion, the idea of “continents” is ambiguous if we define it as no sea in between, Afro-Eurasia is a monster that isn’t helpful to categorise the world. There’s good videos on the topic by CGP Grey and Map Men (previously Jay Foreman), you should go look at that I think!
I would rather divide the world based on the geological definition of continents, about the major tectonic plates! But even that can be difficult since what constitutes as a “major” tectonic plate? It’s still better in my opinion, since it’s something that can be discussed by geologists rather than politicians.
According to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tectonic_plates
Under this definition, the continents are (if we only consider major plates as defined by Wikipedia):
- Eurasia
- Africa
- North America
- South America
- Australia
- Antarctica
- Pacific (mostly ocean)
if we include the some of the larger minor plates (I feel like we should):
- Carribean
- Arabia
- India (subcontinent has levelled up!)
- Somali
- Nazca (again, mostly ocean)
- Philippines (another ocean one)
There are lots of smaller ones but those are mostly ocean too
I think it would be neat if the world was divided to have India, Arabia, the Carribean, and Eastern Africa to have the Europe sort of treatment! India alone has more people than the whole of Europe combined (I think you could throw North America too and the Indian region, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc., will still be more populous!)

Oops yeah that is a good point! Amended the comment.
