  • Parking is an enormous opportunity cost in any sort of built up area. The cost of providing charging is going to be a lot smaller than the cost of not building something remotely useful (ie the cost everyone already has to pay every time they decide to build a parking space instead of a coffee shop).

Unless you’re somewhere that requires parking via zoning laws, I imagine that would create a lot of unwanted parking that nobody is remotely interested in investing any more in than necessary

  • You’re not exactly wrong, nuclear is a terrible pairing with renewables for the reasons you listed, but it’s still probably cheaper than batteries under extreme conditions, which is something we do have to deal with.

90% renewables is cheap, 99% is more expensive, 100% is really really expensive. Batteries are great for 24 hour storage, but storing energy for longer starts to become uneconomical and to hit 100% you have to buy enough capacity for the absolute worst case scenario. Anything that baseline nuclear cuts off from renewable demand is potentially cheaper than the theoretical worst case 1% of renewables (eg if there’s no wind and it’s cloudy mid-winter, how much solar/wind do you need to power the country, or how much battery do you need to maintain power for weeks under these conditions?).

Remember reading the web series “the salvation war”, (where god announces armageddon but turns out modern weaponry altered the scales somewhat). Turns out heaven was only heaven for Middle Ages peasants, a lack of hunger or illness, but you still have to farm and go to church etc. the army gets there and just thinks “wow what a shithole”.

  • I think it depends on volume.

Once or twice a year for arguably not too major things is better than never, because it helps test the system and people won’t get overwhelmed by 1 or 2 alerts a year. Like a fire drill, but maybe slightly more useful since it actually is providing some actual info hopefully.

If they concider firing off more than that, they need to start raising the bar so that they don’t (excepting the emergency action requirement you laid out, obviously if bombs are dropping then regular alerts are justified)

  • That’s true regardless, batteries will never power intercontinental wide-bodies (short some major new developments in battery design). This will probably reduce the maximum aircraft size where batteries remain viable, but they are obviously very viable for short hops in small jets, the point where they cannot compete is somewhere but it’s not “never”, even with this limitation.

That all said, maybe someone will explore just dropping batteries along the way? It sounds ridiculous, but it also sounds like something we have the tech to solve…
