I think this happens because the publisher owns the content and owes royalties to authors under certain conditions (which may or may not be met in this situation). The reason I think this is I had a PhD buddy who published a book (nonfiction history) and we all got a hardy chuckle at the part of the contract that said the publisher got the theme park rights. But what if there were other provisions in the contract that would allow for this situation without compensating the authors? Anywho, this is a good reminder to read the fine print on anything you sign.

I think the tax (including what is taxed and number of brackets) is state dependent. But generally speaking the idea is to not penalize people for buying necessities. But you are right, it is super confusing especially if not noted on the receipt. It’s how we do it. Some factors in choosing the car:

• Distance (gas milage)
• Destination (smaller car for inner city driving/parking)
• Safety of route (sometimes I drive over the mountains and one our cars is better suited)
• Number and size of passengers (children vs adults)
• Cargo (dump run, grocery shopping, etc)
• If I have to take a conf call when driving

I wish there was a word for the utter fascination and adoration of the absurdity and eccentricities of your own culture. I would use it a lot.

Mom here. Depends on the situation. My dog once got off leash while I was pushing my kid in a stroller. She wouldn’t come near the stroller. A man watched the stroller while I got the dog. But I wasn’t far from my kid (10 feet, maybe) and the park was full of people. I likely wouldn’t accept help if my kid was just misbehaving.

Yes, all of those things. Also it makes exercising more comfortable.

There are some places that have a crazy office politics environment (2007 Microsoft, I’m looking at you). If that is the case, I would just change jobs.

However, if you just have annoying coworkers who are off topic, I would just steer the conversation back to work items (“oh, before I forget, can you tell me about [work related item]?”), then leave the conversation. Other tactics that work for me: look really awkward during personal conversation, never ask how someone is doing, wear headphones.

Someone once told me it’s important to care, but not that much. This has also helped me.
