Yeah, for most things, GIMP user interface is absolutely fine.

Most of my mild grumbles about GIMP are not really usability problems, rather just features that would be nice to have. (We got better layer groups now, yesss. Non-destructive plugins are finally within the viewing distance. Yay.) There is stuff that GIMP doesn’t do but competing open source apps do, and while there’s interoperability, it could always be better. (I hear GIMP is finally going to come up with a replacement for xcf files, hope they cooperate with Krita devs and blow the dust off the OpenRaster project.)

The only really aggravating GIMP usability thing is that exporting is very janky (would rather have one single unified export dialog with all the settings), but I assume that’s just a thing because of the way GIMP file plugins have worked in the past.

In the DVD I have, there’s this hilarious behind the scenes clip where the T-Rex animatronic starts twitching and jerking when exposed to the artificial rain, Steven Spielberg watches stuff unfold with his jaw on the ground, and the folks try to dry the animatronic up with towels (as seen here).

Reminds me of some interview of Linus, where they showed another photo of his workspace. Linus said the first thing people usually notice is the standing desk (he was a bit of a trendsetter). Historical tangent: Electronic Arts was originally supposed to be named “Electronic Artists” (as a play on United Artists, the film company). The whole reason the company was founded was because Atari and Activision made game designers anonymous cogs in the machine. EA was like “we’ll actually pay solid compensations and we’ll actually put your name on the cover, how’s that sound?” But, of course, the founders noticed that they weren’t the artists in question, the game designers were, so they changed it.

Layoffs always lead to loss of tacit institutional knowledge. In other words, they end up firing the people who know how shit really works.

Games are creative projects, so this is even more of a problem. They fire people who made the first game and knew exactly why the game was made that way, and it comes as no surprise that the new hires end up making the sequel completely different way. The new people can see the big picture but not the reasoning behind the tiniest details.

Not long ago, I needed to quickly add a 4-line thing to my Ruby on Rails app on my Raspberry Pi. I was like, shit, I really can’t be arsed to mount the RPi over Samba to edit this stuff on VSCode on my Windows laptop to add like 4 lines. I don’t have vim, I can’t be arsed to check which vimlike I have at hand, I can’t be arsed to see if my Emacs setup has been customised for this RPi. So fuck it, Nano it is!

Oh lord my code is actively helping making AI worse.

I checked out, it has some of my repositories. They crawled this stuff in 2025 and they probably won’t update it. Whoever uses this dataset will have to deal with some super garbage, I tell ya.

Well, there’s a reason why I shut down my Windows laptop at least 30 minutes before I have to actually leave somewhere.

My biggest annoyance isn’t even Windows as such, but random applications that have auto-updaters that run when the app is closed. “Okay, time to go now.” “NO! I must update this app!! Do not stop this update or hideously evil data corruption will happen!!!” …there’s no excuse for this stuff. Just do it when starting the application.
