I insist we keep trying.

His expression says different
Oh, it’s harmless. Compared to coumtless kanji tattoos saying shit like “this is in Chinese” which Americans have gotten.
The brother of a friend of mine has a tattoo in Chinese that says “drunk brit” and his best friend has a tattoo in Chinese that says something along the lines of “predator” or “groper” or something like that. They went to Hong Kong back in the day and got way drunk and got tattoos. The groper/predator tattoo is apparently because he grabbed a woman’s boob without her permission.
Both of them are complete jackasses, so I tend to believe the tattoos are justified.

Brother, you’re thinking of Brits
Gonna be honest, I can’t recall the last time I saw someone with kanji tattoos. I know it used to be a thing, but I just don’t know if I have ever seen one.
I remember back in like 2012 I had a white woman coworker with one. A native speaker in the office quietly told her it translated to like “old hag”, and a week later she had it redone to be a rose instead of a language she couldn’t read.
