    Here’s the Badlands National Park in South Dakota in winter.

    Desert as most modern ecologists define it is a region where the evaporation potential exceeds annual precipitation.

    It’s not that it’s always hot, just that it is arid and the topsoil does not retain more water than evaporates each year.




  • I was once studying biology, got up to the point of doing field studies. On one trip, we came upon what looked to be animal droppings. He went on about how the diet of the animal obviously affects the flavor of the excrement and then told us he could tell us what deposited it just by tasting it and proceeded, to the horror of many present to pop the littler turd in his mouth and chew on it.

    Then he revealed that it was actually just a misshapen tootsie roll he had one of the aids sneak ahead on the trail and plant for him to fuck with us.
