There’s definitely something about the experience. I have a projector at home, and it’s not the latest model, and it’s far from the ideal set-up, but I was watching The Martian recently, and found myself wondering if it was the greatest movie ever made, and then had to remind myself that no, it’s just that I was projecting it.

/site/instance_chooser probably doesn’t need to be a route. It’s just the data format returned by /site/instance_chooser_search. As a route, it’s returning the instance info for the site you’re querying, so if you want to keep it as a route, it should probably be called /site/instance_info or something.
In the query for /site/instance_chooser_search, nsfw and newbie are both booleans. With the rest of the API, these are sent as ‘true’ or ‘false’, but they are ‘yes’ and ‘no’ for this route.
The newbie query should probably be newbie_friendly
In the response, monthsmonitored should probably be months_monitored
There’s no way to exclude communities for the response to /topic/list and /feed/list: If you don’t put ‘include_communities’ in the query, it’s defaults to True, but if you put ‘include_communities=false’ in the query it ends up being True also (because the word ‘include_communities’ is in the data).
I watched Jurassic World: Rebirth the other day (it’s alright). It’s such an odd franchise - one that seems to have lost faith in its own premise. There’s this meta assumption that audiences are bored with dinosaurs (I’m not), and that the solution to this imagined problem is to mutate them (it really isn’t, it’s invariably just silly).
I also don’t care that dinos couldn’t really survive in the modern climate - that’s what the whole ‘suspension of disbelief’ thing is for.

Dept. Q on Netflix is pretty good - it’s one of those ‘modern Sherlock & Holmes get their own department in a disused basement to investigate cold cases’ type shows.
It doesn’t, no. The bot gets its data from another bot, at https://lemmyverse.net/, which only crawls Lemmy and MBIN instances at the mo.
We’d either need to send a PR to get that bot to crawl PieFed instances too, or just replicate the functionality from the same machine that runs ‘tcbot’. Communities would also need to provide their ‘active users / month’ too. It’s just the subscriber count currently, but it shouldn’t be too much of a problem hopefully.

There’s some ‘ngrok-free.app’ URLs knocking about from my experiments too. What’s fun is that I can leave them down for months, and then as soon as I start them again, Mastodon is straight there with “HELLO EVERYONE EVER - I’VE DELETED A USER! … I’VE DELETED ANOTHER USER …”
That opening sequence does it no favours - it looks cheap, and they’ve already redone the hallway sequence from Rogue One plenty of times before.
They’ve said similar things before - it’s not like this show invented this problem. Whatever their half-arsed initiatives were before (typically things like sending a middle-aged woman to say “hey guys, don’t be mean to girls, mmkay?”) didn’t work, because a real solution involves acknowledging the wider role that society plays, and spending real money in places that aren’t London.
So instead they’ll just blame boys - recognise that a teenage boy with low self-esteem is a dangerous thing, and give them one more thing to feel bad about. Tell them they should be different once, and ignore all the ways in which adults continue to encourage or discourage the ways they currently are.
And instead of raising places in the North out of deprivation, they’re doing the cheapest thing imaginable. Streaming a show to school kids that explicitly calls out how much modern teaching has been reduced to playing videos for them. Genius.
It’s usually best to given 'em the benefit of the doubt, as a bad performance by a child actor is often more due to the director than the kid.
The show runner for Mad Men cast his own son as ‘Glen’, and that kid was a terrible actor (he’s an adult now obvs, so I consider his performance fair game for criticism).
This show was a bit more kitchen-sinky than shows I’d normally watch - it reminded me a bit of stuff by Ken Loach or Mike Leigh, but I liked Adolescence a lot more than their films (even though I realise that their output is highly regarded).
I’ve seen a fair bit of negativity about it in these kinds of online spaces, so I imagine that I’m going against the grain by saying that I’d recommend it. It’s best to know as little about it as possible beforehand though - not just about the story beats, but also don’t buy into the hype about it and expect too much of it.
TV shows and movies are already compressed. If you try to compress something that’s already compressed, it typically ends up bigger if anything.
