I’m guessing they are keeping the XR2+ and pancake lenses for the focus 4. As someone who works with the focus 3 a lot, the lenses on this thing are pretty bad in 2024, it’s basically impossible to get a clear vision even after adjusting everything. Also it’s not mentioned if it’s still this way but on the focus 3 the head “strap” is solid plastic and cannot be removed or replaced, and the battery is contained at the back of said strap. So if you drop the headset and it breaks, tough luck!

Apple can also afford to use larger chips because they make a profit on the entire computer, not just the processor itself.

Exactly, the apple chips excel at low power tasks and will consume basically nothing doing them. It’s also good for small bursty tasks, but for long lived intensive tasks it behaves basically the same as an equivalent x86 chip. People don’t seem to know that these chips can easily consume 80-90W of power when going full tilt.

And hitting high memory pressure is really not fun on Linux (on Fedora at least), it simply locks up and slows down to a crawl and does nothing for minutes until the oom killer finally kills the bad program. I’ve kind of solvd this by installing a better oom killer on my laptop, but my desktop was easy: buy 32GB of additional ram for like 90$: problem solved

The chip and OS won’t do shit when your ram is saturated by electron apps taking 800MB each. Maybe MacOS behaves better under very high memory pressure than windows does, but it doesn’t mean it’s okay to rip off consumers. That whole 8GB on mac = 16GB on windows has been bullshit all along, and is mostly based on people looking at the task manager and seeing high ram usage on windows (which is a good thing)

Also I hate how currently, AI is used to remove the fun parts of creating things at a computer. Take coding for example, I think I can speak for many people when I say that the fun part of their job, is not the planning or the meetings, it’s the actual coding and stumbling upon a hard problem to solve. Now with AI you the human will only keep the boring parts of the job!
