I’ll admit that the “1 cm tall” is guesstimated based on my memory of the snails in my garden.
The linked source also mentions that some snails can be up to ten times as fast as the typical 8 cm/min (0.0048 km/h), but those appear to be maritime snails, while the snail in the image seems to be terrestrial.
So, a typical snail moves at around 0.0048 km/h, and are around 1 cm tall. The snail in the image appears to be more than 3-4 stories tall, let’s say 15 m. If the speed scales linearly with size, this snail could move at around 7.2 km/h.
So yeah, a very brisk walk for your life should just about keep you out of reach if you’re in decent shape.
The dream here, in FOSS terms, is that governments see the massive potential value in using FOSS, and start actively contributing to it.
Imagine if the German or Danish government puts the people on their IT payroll (who are now maintaining Microsoft systems) to maintain FOSS systems. This would be a huge benefit for everyone, if enough big actors do it, it may be what pushes stuff like Microsoft into being a niche service.
That can really depend. I’ve had both friends and family who have struggled with all kinds of issues. In every case I’ve seen so far, building a daily routine that involves getting out of bed and doing something that makes them feel useful/successful has been the cure.
It turns out that we’re social creatures, and succeeding at doing stuff that benefits someone other than ourselves often helps us feel like life has meaning. That in turn helps us get over/process whatever shit we have behind us.

You can pay someone to vote a specific way, but with the current system, there doesn’t exist a way for you to verify that they actually voted how you told them to.
The problem with any kind of system like this is that if you can verify your own vote, then someone else could always force you to show them that verification.
No matter who threatens you, they can’t see what’s on the paper ballot you put in a box. There’s people at the polling station that ensure that.
If there’s any way of tracking your vote, someone could threaten you, force you to vote a certain way, then force you to show the verification afterwards.
The safest way to ensure everyone gets a fair vote is paper ballots in a box.
I know the US uses a lot of mail-in voting, and that you generally deem it to be secure. I also understand that the US is a far less densely populated country than my own, which makes mail-in voting more necessary. However, we don’t have that in my country, and the reason I’m glad for it is exactly this: There’s no truly effective way to prevent anyone from forcing someone else to mail in a specific vote.
You don’t need to pretend education was perfect before in order to realise that it’s getting worse and try to reverse the trend.

People ditching their PC because they don’t need it anymore doesn’t explain that the relative share of Mac and Linux has increased for the past 15 years though. Unless for some reason Windows users are more likely to ditch their PC because they don’t need it than Mac or Linux users.
It can also be noted that the trend over time for the “unknown” category (which stands for 8 % today) follows the same trend as Linux. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume that Linux is over-represented in the “unknown” category, and may actually be closer to 5-7 %.

I’m not going to push any conspiracy theories, but I believe the strongest evidence pointing towards Covid-19 originating in a lab is the Chinese government insisting that it didn’t, while prohibiting anyone not under their control from investigating. That doesn’t mean it did originate from a lab, but if anything, that’s what it points to. To be explicit: My impression is that, currently, most available evidence points towards natural origins. However the Chinese government has done its best to convince me otherwise.
This is a case where you have to be careful about cause-effect order. I assume that Tiwanese people that are heavily opposed to China are more likely to avoid tiktok. But of course, it’s been shown that tiktok tends to show more pro-China “content” as well, and likely influences the opinions of its users.
In my country we have a flat 25 % tax on anything sold to an end consumer (there are some exceptions). It’s often mentioned as the most important tax we have to equalise the economy and finance the welfare state.
The point is that, because it’s a flat rate, you end up paying more the more money you have. If you only buy cheap groceries, that 25 % isn’t a huge amount of cash, while if you buy an expensive boat or car, it becomes quite a bit. This turns out to be a great way of ensuring that anyone who wants to “live rich” pays a decent amount for it.
