  • I just looked back and my first vault item dates back to 2010. Time flies.

I think enshittification is slightly an overstatement. They’re under VC pressure now and moving aggressively towards a subscription model with capabilities increasingly behind the subscription. I bought a few licenses for Mac and PC a while ago; the software still works but no browser extensions - need a subscription for that. Also, take a look at their job postings. Same job pays double in USA vs Canada. Funny way to do things if they’re Canadian.

  • Thats very true. If I average under the weekly guidelines but hammer through the weekly guidelines in 90 min, it’s quite unhealthy.

Binge drinking is defined differently depending on the jurisdiction. Some require a time window (5 drinks per 2 hr window) and some require it to be a “session” (6 standard units in one session). Some refer to it as “high intensity drinking”. Psychology of Addictive Behavior lists five drinks consumed on one occasion at least once in a two-week period.

Personally, what I mean is that I don’t drink Sunday-Thursday, then Friday I’ll have 3-4 pints of heavy beer, a glass or two of wine, and maybe again on Saturday. On average that puts me over weekly guidelines and also hits some binge thresholds. It’s social, not trying to get excessively drunk. Regardless, it’s unhealthy - no amount of alcohol is. (Just for the people around me, right?)

  • Several years ago I inadvertently (because I didn’t realize who they were) got in a twitter argument with someone who I seem to recall as the creator of electron about how it was fucking embarrassing how bad electron apps are. At the time I kinda felt bad because he seemed like a decent guy and I let loose but I wonder what the carbon footprint of his little side project is…

I think what started the rant was that back at that time, if you scrolled one page back in a chat, it would display a graphic representing a chat while it loaded the chat. And the fucking software was sitting there using a GB of ram and couldn’t keep 5 min of conversation cached. Just inexcusably bad.

I don’t know who at Microsoft had such a hard-on for electron back then, but it seems to have spread and it’s still nowhere close to the good old windows GUI for resource usage.

Thankfully it has gotten better. Slightly. Still pegs my CPU but I think that’s because I have a shit CPU with integrated gfx

  • Don’t overthink the “calories burned in cardio”. Once you subtract your resting metabolic rate you’re going to come up with a number that’s probably disappointing. The additional fatigue may cut down on your non-exercise energy output as well.

You don’t need to do cardio to lose weight. Do cardio to make your life better and live longer.

All these numbers are estimates. There are ways to calculate your actual total daily energy expenditure using spreadsheets, inputting your caloric intake and weight on a daily basis. Personally, I find it a lot easier to use MacroFactor. No relationship, but it is really a great app. It starts with an estimate and with daily tracking will give you weekly updates to adjust caloric intake to meet your goals.

If you haven’t trained before, and given your weight which isn’t terribly high, you don’t really need to adjust calories significantly to gain muscle 100-200 calories is reasonable, at first at least. But you need to adjust the macronutrient composition to ensure that you’re getting enough protein.

You don’t need to do cardio to lose weight.

Spend 30 min a day doing some straight compound lifts (strong lifts 5x5 is a simple starting point) and 30 min doing some low impact cardio. Really, that could be walking at first. Optimally, you want to separate your cardio from lifting, but that’s a bit more towards the top of the pyramid of priorities than the base. Similarly, isolation exercises (like a bicep curl) is less of a priority than compound movements like a pull-up (or a lat pull-down).
