These stories often hit me with a pang of pity at first. Poor, dumb, moronic idiots, I just want to hug them and pat them on the head like the snotnosed children they are.

But as you pointed out, they were roped in to this with promises of cruelty toward others. It’s hard to muster up empathy for that.

Sharif is not politically active, but in 2024, some campaigners came to her shop and told her that Trump would be good for business and against the LGBTQ agenda.

“I was immediately hooked,” she said

Well, Sharif, FUCK YOU. You were immediately hooked because he was going to hurt other people.

And now he’s hurting you (on top of them).

    Cry me a river, Sharif.

Usually… a religious background. While most major religions do talk about inclusivity and helping others… They’re also filled with stories and sometimes even instructions of how to destroy those that don’t believe the same way.

There are religious leaders that push agendas of hatred because they have the power to do so and they’re harbor that in their own heart, surrounding themselves with religion as a shield.

Because they’re fed lies and projection that those people are coming to ruin their way of life. And it’s very hard to undo all of that reinforcement, a lot of dissonance and regret and introspection to navigate if they do along with all the inevitable lifestyle change required to leave that environment. That’s why even the ones who admit they made a bad call, will usually only cite the consequences to themselves and their family. If they ever come around to actual stranger empathy it will be at least another year or two later.

Religion or family trains them from an early age that X==bad.

Evolution for uncounted generations tells us to make babies. It’s a super weapon to use that as the basis for “those people bad”

It takes a lot break a person away from that mindset.

It’s even harder if you’re raised in an area where eveyone is struggling to bootstrap.

Good people will naturally do good things, and bad people will naturally do bad things.

To get good people to do bad things, you need religion.

I used to think that there were good and bad people. I’ve come to believe the tags good/bad are insufficient. People are self-serving, and at best, they are willing to help others once they feel they’ve gotten theirs.

I’ve seen churches that host drag story time so kids can get exposure, I’ve also seen churches that chase off black folk.

I don’t like the idea of churches overall, but I’ve personally known some people who credit church with steering them away from bad things and dark places.

I mean, at some level you have to read these people as extremely indoctrinated. We’ve got a culture of such intense xenophobia and bigotry that people will throw their personal well-being out the window just to hurt some anonymous Evil Other.

On the other… Minnesota went blue in 2024. This person’s vote didn’t matter. Their residency added to an EC that gave Kamala Harris 10 points. They could have stayed home and nothing would be different.

It genuinely enervating to see folks pretend like Presidential Elections are some kind of contest of individual virtues. Like, what if she’d lied? “I voted for Harris so I don’t deserve to be harassed and bankrupted and deported.” Would that have meant anything? No. She’s still going to get her teeth kicked in unless she’s got friends and neighbors who will stand up in her defense.

I want to believe this is a moment for people to realize the fundamental nature of community solidarity. But instead it just feels like I’m reading the outlines for the next round of justified immiseration. Perhaps she should be punished for opening her dumb bitch mouth. Never talk to a reporter and people won’t feel inclined to hate you.

        Sorry, I disagree with you.

Sure, let’s accept they are indoctrinated. Their indoctrination is basically saying them that hurting others is a good thing as long as they are not from “the good group”. And they get “hooked” on that?

Sorry mate, but I am one of those that, if I lived in her country would probably get hurt sooner than her (I’m autistic). If I lived in her country, Sharif would have voted to hurt me and the people like me. And she openly said she “got immediately hooked” on the idea.

Fuck Sharif, vigorously. Because it’s on you if you want to be a piece of shit that gets indoctrinated by a “theory” that says, basically, “we’ll hurt everyone that’s not a MAGA”.

They’re raised to believe they are in a uniquely righteous and benevolent group, fighting a just war against tyrants.

And they have ever misfortune or injustice in their lives attributed to this evil outside force.

People aren’t just born this way. They’re indoctrinated.

It’s not a question of stupidity, it’s an issue of perspective. It’s the same way you have Texas grade school bludgeon “Mexico tyrannized Texas but now we’re free” into each subsequent generation of kids as part of the Texas History curriculum. You raise generations of Floridians by telling them over and over and over again that Cuba is the Bad Place run by the Bad People and its your duty to liberate them by any means necessary. It doesn’t work on everybody, but it inevitably cements this reflexive fear in somebody.

And then you sift these radicals off the pool with police/military recruitment, religious clubs and mission trips, political organizations and anti-communist business communities, and a dozen other state-sponsored organizing groups. In the same way you make an atom bomb - by sifting and compressing the most radioactive isotopes of uranium - you can make Miami Cuban radicalism.
