First UE6 is nuking itself into Slopware Engine, now Unity is gonna be EA so your packages are now microtransactions… FOSS once again wins

It was time to migrate when Unity tried slapping on a dev fee per user install, but being owned by Saidis is also a good reason to leave.

Agreed, but Godot was rough around the edges at the time. The only good news from that Unity dev fee bullshit was Re-Logic donating a shitton of money to Godot, and Godot getting a well-needed injection of development.

Now? There’s no excuse to be using Unity. Even RimWorld just ripped out their Unity code and replaced it with their own engine. No new features, just a new, much faster backend.

Between this and Unreal Engine getting rid of C++/Blueprints, I could see this being very good for Godot

This could be a disaster for studios in mid development if they actually raise the cost or even remove free tier all together.

Per install? Is that for each time you install it or each user? How do you even count an install? You can just run a game from a folder. Is copy/paste an install, what about moving a folder, or switch a drive to another PC?

Oh well, Rimworld is probably the game I play most using unity and they are moving away from it.

Yeah you’ve basically hit the nail on the head on why it was a disaster.

Unity wanted to charge devs for every install by every customer. Not copies sold. Not revenue.

          Every “install”.

It made no sense, and was either impossible, or a privacy nightmare to implement.

This is another good reason to GTFO when the enshitification starts. Not only because the experience itself will continue to be a testing ground for how much more you’ll pay and how much worse you’ll put up with, but the endgame, is almost always them trying to get bought out for the highest price … either directly through a buyout or indirectly through an IPO. Hat’s off to everyone reading this here tonight on Lemmy instead of reddit.

      Dude,

You can say “ass” and “fuck” if you want to. You’re on an 18+ social media platform, and everyone would understand what you meant even if you weren’t. You can choose other words if you feel like these ones are too strong for you. It’s your right to do this, but it comes off as f***ing fucking weird.

      Sincerely,

      Everyone

Thank God I tried to avoid buying Unity games months back.(Mainly cause of that one dropped plan of paying for every download and buying of Ironsource which put spyware on people’s phones)

I fucking knew it, of course the sell out is total.

If anybody has a bunch of LLM tokens to burn, and wants to use them for good, convert everything thats free and clear on the Unity Asset Store over to Godot.

They both use C#, we can worry about converting things to GDScript later.

Hahah, well, unless/untill the LLM creators clamp down and censor/train that kind of capability out of them.

But there will be open weight models, and people will uncensor those, and those can be run locally or you could rent your own server and run them there.

But but, uncensored models might be declared to be illegal along basically the same lines as a nuclear weapon, or maybe the same lines as stl files to print firearm components.

        … vidyeo gamse!!!

All the more reason to download a few open-weight models from huggingface before nvidia clamps down on the ecosystem.

Some are already “unaligned” meaning there’s no ethical training and the user is responsible for building their own safeguards before deploying them. I think Dolphin is one of those, and its based on Mistral if I remember correctly

Well, thats certainly a neat idea, basically ‘make open source Unity in Rust’…

        … but I don’t think that’s what I described?

        Am I missing something?

Because if this is made out of Rust, incorporates Lua as a scripting language… I don’t see how that would be able to run most (any?) Unity assets, and it doesn’t mention anything about converting from the more Unity asset specific format to something more generic, or Godot specifically.

What I’m trying to describe would be more like this, but not 2+ years stale:

        https://github.com/V-Sekai/unidot_importer

… and then basically just using an LLM to semi-automate the actual conversion of free and clear Unity assets.
