“Why did you vote for him?” a member of Congress asked.

Evangelical Christian people were lied to, if you really want to know the truth. And that’s exactly what happened.

Evangelical Christians are easy to lie to, if you want to know the truth, because they disdain intelligence, preferring their world in which they cosplay magic in fairyland 24/7 without even a tiny hint of self-awareness (because they have none). Given the same choice he would do it again, because he’s too cost-sunk in his dumbass roleplaying to do anything different.

Evangelical Christians just want to hear that they’re going to be rewarded for their suffering. Catholics as well. The Rapture, Heaven, Honoring the Son of God…

It’s a whole group of miserable people who are desperate for affirmation that their misery has meaning. Then they groom their children into miserable lives, and pressure strangers into being miserable as well. It’s incredibly sad.

I’m now of the opinion that most of the “trump voters” (which, again, not the majority of the country, and I’m not 100% convinced the election wasn’t bought or stolen) are either ignorant but generally well-meaning people who probably thought Reagan was fine and just want this admin to be over with while keeping everything they have and, ideally, “getting more” - OR - are the racist bigoted garbage people we mostly assume them all to be on here.

The difference is enormous, and it is absolutely controlled and maintained by traditional media. (Which now includes the trainwrecks of facepals and the nazi twits.)

Totally preventable, absolutely foreseen, and fwiw explained 1,000 different times in as many ways. But here we are either preaching to the choir or fighting with leftists because they’re the only other ones smart and/or savvy enough to be here.

TL;DR it’s not going to get better without a popular Democrat.

It’s not going to get better even with a popular democrat. Over and over again, even as the leopards are ripping their faces off, they announce that they’re sad about getting eaten, but they would totally vote for the Orange Felon again.

Politics for them isn’t about choosing a good government, or getting someone to represent them properly. It’s team sports, and you have to vote for your team so your side wins.

I think that’s partially true but not completely. A popular Democrat shifted things to the better in 92 and 2008. They did so amongst most of the same Fox “News” and Limbaugh followers that had sewn up everything before.

Yes, there are ‘sports fan’ politics that will never vote for a woman, god forbid a black woman, or a gay man, probably for our foreseeable lifetimes. Right now, they tip the scales.

So when the Democrats put forth a white man next (or, possibly, a black man) let’s not be shocked. I mean, this place will go up in flames and our ‘leftist’ compatriots will work overtime to defeat them again, but - that’s why we’re here (again). Because the majority of voters can’t imagine a better world that isn’t very much like the one we live in now. And imo that’s true across most if not all democracies.

Radical progressivism has no allies. Radical conservatism has immediate history, allies, and a very, very low bar to entry. So if we don’t move forward from the middle, it’s probably not going to move forward. That’s not ideal, but it’s likely the reality.

I feel like that is overly reductive. These are people who are seeing their lives become harder year over year, and are being handed a convenient scapegoat by people they were taught to trust. Their biggest crime is usually a lack of critical thinking… to start with. It often grows from there to a lack of empathy.

Working around a few of them, the biggest factor I can tell is that they’ve been sheltered and groomed their whole life to think that way. Anything else would just seem foreign. (Like trying to convince a Christian that Jesus wasn’t white, if he was ever real)

Since a lot of these beliefs are so ingrained into their psyche, an existential crisis, like what he may be experiencing, is likely one of the few things that can work.

Why would he fucking care one ounce of a fart what you, a powerless nonentity, think of him? There’s nothing you can offer him in the future. He only ever cares what you can do for him. We’ve got a family of psychopaths loving below us, from some Eastern European country. They’ll bang on their ceiling if we move around after 9 pm. He tried to actually prohibit it, but I told him no, not politely. My landlord seems to hate them, too. They were trying to get his attention on the sidewalk a while back, and he barked at them “I told you that I don’t want to hear from you unless your place is on fire!” He likes us, though.

But ever since Trump took office again, and ICE started rounding people up, these people have been SILENT. No banging on the ceiling , no dirty looks, no monopolizing the courtyard, etc.

I’m pretty sure they’re just flying under the radar, knowing that we could make their lives miserable with one phone call. I wouldn’t do it, but if the tables were turned, I have no doubt that they would dime us out in a heartbeat.

      Lacking empathy ?

“In my work with the defendants (at the Nuremberg Trials 1945-1949) I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think 1 have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. I feel the same. I dont see a path forward without a huge catalyzing event (which is almost certainly not going to involve puppies and rainbows).

It took the right wing 50 years of dedicated, hard work to align all the stars and get their men into the right offices all at the same time in order to dismantle so much of our government. Without a huge catalyst, I fear its going to take the left 50 years to swing things back the other way. We might have to live through decades of shit like Iran, North Korea, or Russia before it swings back the other way.
