    The key is not to give the best hours of your life to your employer. If that’s the first 2-3 hours after you wake up, then wake up rebelliously early and rock out before work.

    Way to tell is you normally find yourself coming home from work and basically collapsing and not being able to fully engage with the things you love. If that’s you, it’s worth giving the early bird thing a fair chance.

    Of course, if you know in your bones that that just ain’t you and life begins at 9pm, then get your groove on then and don’t worry about what the morning people are saying. In a different life the two of you would have just taken different shifts keeping watch to defend the village from wolves and stuff.

    Important thing is just finding what works best for you

      I’d say that however you feel before and after work, you should try both for a short while.

      You will change when you change your routine. You can never tell beforehand how.

      Certainly a good idea and in summer I make use of the hours before work quite often. But wtf do you do in winter when it’s dark until shortly before you start work and is dark by the time you finish?

      Summer mornings before work I often go for a swim and then cook breakfast on the beach before cycling home to start work.

        Can do whatever you want really, it’s your time after all! For one example, I prefer trail running but if conditions don’t permit it I just hit the treadmill with an audiobook.

        We could probably make a whole separate post for this! Ask people if they’re night owls or morning maniacs, and what they like to do with that time

      It does suck at Forest. I’m out of habit at the moment, but when you actually just wake up at that time instead of the dreaded snooze loop, you come into the day more awake and alert than anyone else, on top of the fact that you’ve probably taken some time to watch, read, or listen to something to relax ahead of time.

      It can genuinely be the difference between a good day and a bad one.

        Yeah, I’ve always been a morning person, so when I add something to my routine, I often just start waking up earlier to do it. At this point I’m waking up around 5, and it’s crazy how much stuff I can get done just by auto-piloting while still groggy from waking up.

        My wife isn’t a morning person at all, but she’s started getting up with me too, and she begrudgingly admits that it’s pretty nice to have stuff done before going to work, rather than tacking them on afterward.

        If I woke up at 5am, I’d have to go to bed at like 8pm to get a full night’s sleep. I went to a friend’s party yesterday that didn’t even start until 800pm. Getting up that early on the regular would mean a death blow to social life, or you’d be exhausted all the time from staying up into normal evening hours.

          One off late nights are fine though. As long as you normally get a good night sleep then it’s not much of a problem

        If I wake up at 5am I’m so tired that I don’t accomplish anything the whole day. And I’d rather be most alert after work when I can do something interesting with my time.

        I find that I can either start or end the day good. When I get up early, I have a good first half of the day and then start fading. When I wake up late, I get a rough start but a strong finish.

        I can do the relaxing and reading in the evening if I don’t have to go to bed at 21:00 because my Alarm goes off at five. There is no inherent value in getting up at 5:00 if it doesn’t match with your daily rhythm.

      Every year that goes by I get closer to going to bad at 9pm. Something about being an adult and not needing the night to flee my responsibilities. That can be done in broad daylight now.
