    Jesus Christ.

Every person who enabled this corruption and the price gouging of energy for Georgia’s consumers should be looking at a decades-long prison sentence.

So, I live in Georgia & I’m happy to see Dems on the PSC, but electricity here is 8 cents per kWh. There were some big cost overruns adding nuclear reactors to Vogtle, but them and Watts Bar are the only people to add nuclear since 1990. Relative to a lot of other states, it’s hard to argue Georgians are being gouged.

And I really would like to know what’s in the data center deals, especially what happens when the data center goes tits-up 3 years into the life of a 40-year power plant

I was reading this first, then I saw your 8c/kWh.

according to data from U.S. Energy Information Administration, which shows Georgia’s rate at exactly 15 cents per kilowatt-hour as of May 2025.

Nationally, average residential rates range from 17 to 17.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, placing Georgia 22nd among U.S. states for electricity costs — a position that makes it moderately priced compared to the rest of the country.

Looks like the EIA is figuring the total bill for some ‘typical’ customer, so you get the actual per-kWh cost plus the fixed service cost divided by whatever they think ‘typical’ use is.

This is the actual residential tariff sheet: https://www.georgiapower.com/content/dam/georgia-power/pdfs/tariffs/r.pdf

$0.082/kWh most of the year, $0.087 summer, rising to ~$0.15 if you use over 650 kWh/month (which is a lot: my 3 br house tops out under 600 in Aug). Taxes & fees around 20%, so effectively $0.098 & 0.104. The kicker is the fixed service charge of $0.46/day = $16/month after taxes, effectively a 5.6 kWh/day minimum. That’s the part they’ve been raising. Commercial & industrial users pay proportionally less fixed fees, so their ‘typical’ kWh cost is lower.

Fixed charges may sometimes cover stuff like cleanup , decommissioning and waste management for nukes - if anyone actually cares about such things. Dunno if that’s the case in Georgia though. Nukes are complex long term things and they and their legacy often outlast the builder and operator companies - so they often will be , de-facto, “socialised” , one way or another.

What are the fees like though? I pay roughly $0.18/KWH bit I don’t have any additional fees, my bill doesn’t get broken down like that, just an additional $5 or so in local and state utility taxes.

New Hampshire chiming in, a customer of the oh-so-wonderful (puke puke!) Eversource… This months bill is 41.66 in service fees to buy 27.81 worth of electricity, at 18.6 cents per kWh.

I remember when the leaflets went out for them, promising to stop Georgia Power from fucking everyone over. Like a week later, Georgia Power put out ads about how much they care about us and how every other state’s power companies are raising rates and we’ll do a rate freeze just please you don’t need to vote for them we’ll be good for an undisclosed period of time maybe ending after the midterms.

Beginning in January, three of the five officials on the Georgia Public Service Commission will be Democrats. It will be the first time the party has controlled the powerful energy regulation board in 30 years. The commission, which regulates utilities including the state’s largest electric provider, Georgia Power, has come under more scrutiny in recent years due to rising power bills and the high energy demands of data centers.

Now, Democrats plan to focus on affordability, clean energy, and closer scrutiny of Georgia Power.

Probably happened because people like me (not in Georgia), voted straight ticket D out of disgust and didn’t bother researching candidates.

We’re clearly talking about the 2024 midterms, a general election.

As to smaller elections, there usually aren’t primaries. I didn’t get to pick between Debbie and Susie Democrat for School Board District 5.

Easy solution: prosecute them for destroying evidence, and make the punishment as severe as the extent of the law allows. Tell them if there is any mitigating evidence in the contract, to provide the full, unredacted original. Otherwise take it as evidence that they are guilty of everything they’re credibly accused of.

If they say “but… but mah innocence until proven guilt!” Tell them this: their destruction of evidence is proof enough.
